On June 9, Caltrans District 5 electrician Brandon Akers was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101, south of Santa Maria, when he observed a Fish and Game vehicle weaving. Akers pulled alongside, discovered the driver was in some type of physical distress and began honking in an attempt to revive the Fish and Game employee.

Akers than used his truck to provide a “traffic block” to prevent other vehicles from being hit by the weaving truck, which had reached speeds of 80 mph. The Fish and Game truck proceeded off the highway and struck an oak tree.

As a result of the impact, two large branches fell onto the highway. Akers cleared the roadway and than assisted in the rescue of the driver.
