KCBX, San Luis Obispo County’s public radio station, is receiving a $60,000 federal grant through the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB) to improve the station’s digital signal.

Cong. Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) made the announcement Friday. Her office helped secure the funds from the taxpayer-supported CPB.

The grant will help to increase the station’s digital signal within its current analog coverage area. KCBX will use the funding to purchase and install new equipment that will increase the digital power level by at least four times its current power level.

“I am so pleased that KCBX has been awarded this funding by the Corporation of Public Broadcasting. Public radio provides such a critical service to our local communities, and this investment will allow our great station to better serve its listeners,” said Capps.

The CPB, established in 1967, as a conduit for federal financing of noncommercial radio and television stations across the U.S. In turn, stations raise additional funds through their listeners and viewers.
