Police run bear out of town

October 28, 2010

San Luis Obispo police officers were able to chase a 200 to 250 pound black bear from the populated area of Marsh and Santa Rosa Streets to a more rural area closer to open space late Wednesday night.

Residents first spotted the bear in the 1500 block of Marsh Street. Officers worked to keep the bear out of populated area and drove him toward San Luis Creek where the bear remained in the creek behind Scolari’s on Johnson Avenue for about an hour.

The bear was last spotted at around 6 a.m. in the area of Spring Street and Flora Court headed towards a backyard that abutted open space.

I’m not begrudging these county natives the right to feast on us transplants or on our pets.

The article ends with the bear’s “heading towards a backyard” odds are that it will be back, hopefully it can be relocated.

So maybe all our complaining about police behavior actually does have an effect! I’ve still got my criticisms of the department, but on this one, good job guys/gals! Thank you.

mkaney, Those were my exact thoughts. I was recalling when they killed the lion this summer and how angry so many citizens were about it. I saw this article in the Trib yesterday and didn’t read it because I figured that the SLOPD had killed it. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was “run out of town”.

I agree, GOOD JOB SLOPD.

Great job by not shooting this county native.
