Monterey County ranks highest in youth murders

Monterey County ranked highest in California youth murders rates in 2009, according to a new study released this month by the Violence Policy Center. [TheCalifornian]
The study, “Lost Youth” is a county-by-county analysis of homicide victims ages 10 to 24.
San Luis Obispo County ranked 22nd out of 35 counties in youth murders.
The study shows that 84 percent of 2009 youth homicides in the United States involved firearms. Of the 803 youth homicide victims, 723 were male and 80 were female.
In 2009, blacks between the ages of 10 and 24 were murdered at a rate more than 14 times higher than white youth and young adults.
“While black youth comprise seven percent of California’s population between the ages of 10 and 24, they accounted for 30 percent of the homicide victims in the same age group,” the survey says.
