Schwarzenegger ponders run for EU president

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who effortlessly transitioned  from Hollywood film stardom to California governor, could have his sights set on a new job as next head of the European Union.[YahooNews]

The Austrian-born former body builder, 63, at loose ends as he tries to figure out what his next act should be, reportedly is being advised by aides to return to his native Europe to run for the EU presidency, Newsweek reported.

“In the next few years, the EU will be looking for a much more high-profile president — somebody who can unify Europe,” Schwarzenegger’s chief of staff Terry Tamminen told the magazine.

“The French won’t want a German, and the Germans won’t want an Italian. How about a European-born person who went off to America and — could return to be the Washington or Jefferson of a new unified Europe?” said Tamminen, all but nominating his former boss for the job.

Even so, Schwarzenegger has remained mum about plans to get back into acting or politics.

Oh come on! Arnold would be perfect for this watered-down non-position of highly-visual importance!


Besides, it may be for President of the EU Parliament instead of the Council, as bob mentions above. It seems the EU Parliament is made up of two very diverse groups: Liberals and Socialists… yeah, they’re nowhere near the same.


If you think our political system is rigged, visit Europe! If they want Arnold, they can have him… after he finishes this next Terminator movie I’ve heard rumors about.

Got to agree with that, but who really cares what ahnold does? It would be the same if the donald was running for the office, or any other fat cat millionaire…

Somehow I just don’t see European voters being swayed with: “Don’t be a girly man, vote for Arnold!” Upon a google search for EU presidency, this explanation from wikipedia sure explains a lot. Seems like there is no singular “President”, but instead a six month term where an official of a EU nation serves along with two other members for a shared 18 month term. Two items stood out to me in the explanation; those with really good negotiating skills will flourish as the position(s) demand a lot of negotiating, and it is apparently really bad form to try push an agenda that favors your own country alone. I just don’t see Arnold up to either task, not to mention he has no official position in any EU government. Maybe they just a flashy figurehead is what they think they need, in which case Arnold would fit the bill perfectly.
