Randy Quaid’s Santa Barbara extradition denied

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office announced Friday that actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi Quaid will not be extradited from their residence in Canada back to California to face felony and misdemeanor charges. [TorontoSun]

The Quaids have repeatedly failed to respond to outstanding charges of felony vandalism at their former home in Montecito, Calif., to which they allegedly caused more than $5,000 worth of damage.

Nearly two years of legal charges, missed court dates and warrants issued against the Quaids prompted the district attorney’s request to have them extradited from their current home in Canada.

So far, thanks to Evi Quaid’s recent Canadian citizenship because her father was Canadian-born, the Quaids are permitted to remain in Vancouver.

Santa Barbara District Attorney Joyce Dudley said that the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) denied the extradition because they typically reserve such measures for “more serious offenses,” the Toronto Sun said.

Dudley said that the “USDOJ noted the resource intensive and lengthy process involved in seeking extradition from Canada” when considering having Canada aid in returning the Quaids to California, or their extradition.

This announcement comes almost two years after the couple’s initial run in with law for skipping out on a $10,000 San Ysidro hotel bill. The couple later posted bail on charges of felony vandalism and were expected to appear in court the following day — the first of several court dates the couple missed.

As a result, the district attorney added additional felony and misdemeanor trespassing and illegally squatting charges.

The couple told ABC that their fleeing to Canada had nothing to do with these charges and that it was to escape a Hollywood mafia that specifically targets celebrities, referring to the group as “Star Whackers.”

Randy Quaid, an oscar-nominated, golden globe award-winning actor, said that “Star Whackers” are responsible for the deaths of his former co-workers Heath Ledger and David Carradine. He also said such celebrities as Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan and his brother Dennis Quaid are being targeted by this group for their money.

Because of this, Randy Quaid said he and his wife are living as “Hollywood refugees” in Vancouver.

“I am being embezzled from by this monstrous ring of accountants, estate planners and lawyers who are mercilessly slandering me and trying to kill my career and, I believe, murder me in order to gain control of my royalties I wish to return to only one thing: Work,” Randy Quaid said during an Immigration and Refugee hearing.

They are waiting till California splits into two states. Once the geographical jurisdiction of the Santa Barbara courts is reestablished they will be sure to come.

Or could this just be a simple matter of self anointed hollywood royalty stiffing local merchants and skipping town, seeking sanctuary out of country?

If they hadn’t paid their bills, I would think that they were malingering but they did pay back the hotel that they stiffed and the landlord for the damages to the property they squatted in. They even paid a huge fine (around 40K) when they got extradited from Texas. These two seem to come up with large amounts of cash when necessary. Right now, they are in trouble for blowing off some of their court appearances and the Judge doesn’t like being told to go stuff it.

I really think that they are both crazy, poor things. What’s odd is that they have the same mental illness!

One thing for certain is that they aren’t doing this because of money, the money clearly has nothing to do with it. Like I said, they came up with the money they owed and then some.

Could this be one of those stories right out of a movie, where everyone convinced that a victim is insane and delusional, only to find out that in fact someone was hunting them down?! lol Enquiring minds want to know.

Hmm, I guess that could tie in with a song that I like by Steely Dan called ‘Gaslighting Abby’. Maybe they drug Abby so she dosn’t remember their menage a trois. Like most of Dan’s songs, racy but very good. I’m glad you posted that, it helps me understand the song a little better.
