Wrong way driver busted

A Nipomo man driving a Nissan Rogue was arrested Sunday after officers stopped him while traveling north on southbound Highway 101.

California Highway Patrol officers stopped Ramon J. Ramos, 21, at 4:41 a.m. after he had driven from Santa Maria to Arroyo Grande on the wrong side of the freeway. A patrol car blocked Ramos’s path in order to facilitate his capture, said authorities, and he stopped his vehicle when he found the road blocked.

According to a CHP press notice, Ramos was driving at 70 miles an hour and his actions were reported by numerous 911 callers.

Ramos was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, and bailed out Sunday afternoon.

I am pretty pissed off that we do not have any more specific of traffic laws that allow law enforcement to add additional charges in cases like this; even though this happen so early in the morning, there could have been a head-on accident many times over. The fact that the man was allowed to post bail so quickly is also very upsetting; how do we know he will not be driving drunk again very soon? Did the officials confiscate his driver’s license? Probably not, given the state of our DUI laws; it seems as though reckless drivers like this are given way too many chances to screw up over and over again, and someone just might die because of this person being able to get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Now that is what I call DRUNK DRIVING. There should be different levels of DUI and this one would be a MAX violation but he will be treated the same as the guy who was a .08 at a check point. Doesn’t seem right.
