Cal Poly student dead after collision

August 31, 2012

A 22-year-old Cal Poly student died Thursday from injuries he sustained after he collided with a pickup truck Wednesday while skateboarding on Grove Street in San Luis Obispo.

Jacob Van Staaveren, who was not wearing a helmet, failed to halt at a stop sign and collided into the truck’s driver’s side door. The driver of the truck, Gilberto Baltazar, 43, was treated for minor facial injuries and released from Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

Staaveren, who would have started his senior year this fall, was originally from Kenwood in Sonoma County.

Police said they do not believe that drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash.

My prayers go out for his family, I can’t imagine what they must be going through.

Rest in peace young man. I strongly encourage all skateboarders, bicylists, joggers, etc to be aware of their actions on the road ways which are designed for law abiding cars. My thoughts also for the driver who now must live with this tragic incident.
