Sierra Vista doctor killed in bicycle accident

September 12, 2012

The bicyclist who died after being hit by a semi-truck Wednesday morning in San Luis Obispo was Dr. Damian Horstman.

Candy Markwith, the CEO of Sierra Vista regional Medial Center, provided the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we tell you we have tragically lost a member of the Sierra Vista family and our local medical community. Earlier today Dr. Damian Horstman lost his life while enjoying one of his life’s passions when he was in an accident while riding his bicycle.

“Dr. Horstman, 39, has been an integral member of the Sierra Vista medical staff since February 2008. For the past two years he provided a great deal of leadership at Sierra Vista serving both as Chair of the Anesthesia Department and also as Vice Chief of Staff. He was in line to be Chief of Staff starting next year.

“Dr. Horstman graduated from the UC Davis School of Medicine and completed his residency at Stanford University. In addition to his enthusiasm and infectious manner, he brought much knowledge and valuable teaching to the Sierra Vista operating room highlighted by his interest in acute pain management.

“Needless to say this is a tragic loss to his beloved wife and two children, his friends and colleagues, and to Sierra Vista and our medical community. We will provide further information on funeral and/or memorial services as they are arranged. “

Blessings to those who are touched by this tragedy.

Tragic loss. Smart guy, experienced bike rider; it’s hard to believe this accident was his fault as the Tribune seemed to imply.

I’m unclear as to what happened; I’m not familiar w/that area of SLO. Is there a bike lane or wide shoulder? Other website comments are suggesting that the biker rode in front of the truck (?) Tragic for the biker, his family AND the truck driver.

Stupid mistakes are almost always fatal to someone. One moment of not thinking , or paying attention, and its good bye……. Yes Im sorry for Him… but it could happen to anyone.!

So sorry for all family and friends.

So sad. Condolences to all that cared for this caring person.

Damian was a life-long friend. Tragedy beyond words.

I’m very sorry for your loss. Peace be with you.
