Credit card breach at SLO Barnes & Noble

October 25, 2012

Hackers have stolen credit card information from customers of 63 Barnes & Noble stores across the country, including the San Luis Obispo store. [LATimes]

On Sept. 14, Barnes & Noble discovered that the customer information had been stolen but kept the matter quiet at the Justice Department’s request made so that the F.B.I. could investigate.

The company is asking customers at any of the 63 Barnes & Noble where information was stolen to change their PINs and scan their accounts for unauthorized transactions. Most of the hacking occurred in September.

Currently, cashiers are swiping customer cards on readers connected to cash registers.

Technology is a bittersweet thing. We cannot live without it and it comes with a heavy risk.
