An earthquake measuring 4.6 and centered offshore near Goleta shook residents as far north as Bradley early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey has reported.

The 7:38 a.m. tremor caused no apparent damage or injuries, officials said, and no tsunami threat exists.

It was five miles under the earth’s surface in the Santa Barbara Channel, according to the U.S.G.S.

A subsequent report by the federal agency said the shaker “was felt in much of the Bakersfield-Los Angeles-San Luis Obispo area..”

There were actually four earthquakes greater than 2.5 in the Isla Vista area this morning, between 6:00 and 12:00 AM:

05/29/2013, 11:05 AM: 2.5, located 7km 2 of IV, 9.3km deep

05/29/2013, 7:38 AM: 2.6, located 8km W of IV, 10.3km deep

05/29/2013, 6:50 AM: 2.6, located 6km WNW of IV, 9.5km deep

05/29/2013, 6:38 AM: 4.8, located 5km W of IV, 8.0km deep

Also,at about 3:00 AM, 05/29/2013, my husband I were awakened by a very sharp-shock of what felt like an earthquake. There was no earthquake recorded for that time.

Typically, the earthquakes from the Santa Barbara area which are located near or on the sea floor, are of a very gentle, rolling type. The “earthquake” (or whatever) we felt at about 3:00 AM was more like the hard jerking type of earthquakes, like the ones in the Tehachapi area.

I live next to Camp Roberts and not far from Hunter Liggett, and I work in Cambria. These areas are normal testing/training grounds for our military. You likely experienced a percussion wave.

Keep in mind, the U.S. government has created/maintained weapons for 30+ years before declassifying even their existence. I have experienced many of the “shocks” you describe that are not related to normal geological activity.

Hehehe. Oh, the stories I cannot ever share…

Hey, speaking of “boogey men” and Big Brother (sort of?) today is the grand opening of NSA’s Utah Data Center (a measley $1.5 billion facility) so now they can continue to store ALL of our electronic communications for the next 100 years or so. Cellphone calls, texts, e-mails, downloads, anything that goes out over the internet and/or major telco’s. Nice. Hooray for totalitarianism!

Glad everyone is OK and in the very big picture, life’s not so bad…
