Former Cal Poly professor sentenced for flashing students

LibraryA former professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was sentenced to three years of formal probation for exposing his genitals to people at the campus library in May 2012. [KSBY]

At the time of the alleged indecent exposure, Shaun Kelly was an assistant professor in the Cal Poly BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department. He resigned last December before school officials could hold a disciplinary hearing.

The court ordered Kelly to register as a sex offender and pay a fine. For the next three years, he is subject to random search and seizure.

So, due to the inflexibility of our “sex offense laws,” this guy now has the permanent label of “a sex offender” which will basically make him a drain on society as he will have few options for employment, housing, etc.


What he did was wrong and the rest of his sentence was appropriate.but classifying him with pedophiles and rapists for the rest of his life is “cruel and unusual” punishment.

Isn’t this the same Shaun Kelly who was married to Los Osos Community Services District Vice President Maria Kelly? The Maria Kelly who resigned in shame because of her affair with County Public Works Director, Paavo Ogren?

Perhaps it’s best to get your facts right before making such assumptions.

An investigation into the allegations of conflict of interest wit regard to Kelly and Ogren wad conducted by the county. A published report dated Oct. 2011 determined NO conflict of interest and that they in fact were a dating couple who had known each other for a number of years.

Her resignation came on the heels of her kid’s alleged involvement with drugs and a drunk driving accident involving Orgen’s kid as well as her kid..

Well, if it’s in a published report it must be true, right? I recall the Supervisors changed the agenda around to scuttle public comment…the report was presented morning instead of afternoon before persons wanting to speak arrived.

At the time I thought, “You know, Ogren is already getting h-jobs enough from Kelly…does the BOS really have to give him one, in the form of a get-out-of-jail-free sham of a report, too?”
