calpolyCal Poly University Police are searching for a man believed to have punched a student in the face Saturday afternoon. [KSBY]

A Cal Poly student told police that he was walking alone on campus near Poly Canyon Village around 12:50 p.m. Saturday when a man approached him on the sidewalk, punched him twice in the face and demanded money. The man ran away, though, when the student tried to defend himself.

The student only suffered minor injuries and did not lose any property.

Cal Poly’s Week of Welcome for incoming students was going on at the time.

University Police worked with the San Luis Obispo Police Department and the California Highway Patrol to find the suspect but did not succeed. CHP used a helicopter in the search.

Police described the suspect as a Hispanic male about 20-years-old with an athletic build. Officers say he is about 6 feet 1 inch tall and 175 pounds with short black hair. The suspect was last seen wearing a gray and black beanie and a dark maroon hooded sweatshirt.

University Police ask anyone with information to contact the department at 805-756-2281.

Maybe he wants to be a lawyer, and needed money for his tuition..

A helicopter? Wow. Waste of money.

*** A little insider information***

The helicopter was already in the area on routine patrol. Therefore, no extra costs were incurred.

Welcome to California. That cr@p doesn’t fly here, okay? Get a job and demand money the old fashioned way, by working. I had three jobs while in college.

If the victim was on the boxing team, the suspect would have become the volunteer victim.
