Teach Elementary School moving to Grand Avenue

November 20, 2013

TeachSan Luis Coastal Unified School District trustees voted unanimously Tuesday night to move Teach Elementary School to a new location on Grand Avenue near Cal Poly. [Tribune]

Earlier this year, the board discussed closing Teach because of a philosophical opposition to the existence of an accelerated learning school and space issues. Parents and former students were vocal in their support of continuing to offer the accelerated learning program.

Teach, with 100 students, currently shares an overcrowded campus with Bishops’ Peak Elementary. Teach is to relocate to the old Pacheco school site by the start of the 2014-15 school year.

A portion of the site will remain leased to the SLO Classical Academy, a private school with 300 students. However, several other tenants will have to relocate including some charter schools, a preschool and the University of San Luis Obispo School of Law.

Is that the preschool spot near the Grand Ave entrance to Poly? If so, that’s going to be a NIGHTMARE for traffic. Many students also come in from Morro Bay and Los Osos, so that’s going to be an even farther distance to drive.

I also like that the board had a “philosophical opposition to the existence of an accelerated learning school” – that about sums up our board.
