Atascadero State Hospital officials arrested a 34-year-old patient for murder Wednesday following the death of another inmate. [LA Times]

On Wednesday, a patient-on-patient attack occurred in a dorm room around 2:15 p.m. Responders rushed the victim to the hospital’s urgent care, but doctors pronounced the patient dead around 3 p.m.

At 10:38 p.m., officers booked patient Adam Paul Cary into San Luis Obispo County Jail for murder.

Cary has several felony convictions, including an attempted rape in Riverside County in 2003. After the attempted rape, a judge deemed Cary mentally incompetent due to a mental illness, and he has served time in multiple state hospitals.

Cary is 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 224 pounds.

Initial reports indicated that there was a second suspect in Wednesday’s killing. Officials have made no other arrests, though.

He was probably afraid they were going to release him…..

A patient in a State Mental Hospital kills another patient. Who is responsible, the patient or the State (us)? Certainly we will fund the answer process and this patient will have earned our support for more room and board.

Just another exciting, fun-filled day in Forensic Mental Health, folks.
