Cal Poly dealing with Norovirus outbreak

More than two dozen Cal Poly students appear to have contracted the Norovirus prompting campus health officials to ask students to wash their hands and practice good hygiene to prevent the virus from spreading further.

As of May 8, campus health center staff have seen 27 cases of Norovirus. Except for two, all of the students inflicted with the virus attended the Coachella/Stagecoach venue in Indio, Calif.

Norovirus, which is spread through fecal/oral transmission, causes nausea, vomiting and fever. Symptoms usually last from 48 to 72 hours.

Cases of the virus on campus appear to be dwindling.

When I attended Cal Poly, I was shocked to see how many men use the restroom and don’t wash their hands. I know, it’s disgusting. Norovirus is spread more from vomiting. New research shows that the virus can survive for many days on surfaces and the surfaces are very difficult to disinfect. Hand sanitizer can help. The best solution is to frequently wash your hands; especially before eating.

There are studies showing that the surfaces you touch in a restroom are more likely to pass along germs than say, for instances, a man’s urine dispenser. The hand sanitizers are good but what happens when you use those clean hands to turn off the water at the sink or to open the door on your way out? This may be why some men don’t always wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
