carSan Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deployed its swat team Wednesday afternoon in the arrest of a car thief who failed to abide by officers demands to leave an apartment on Stenner Street.

Shortly after 2 p.m. the county gang task force was conducting surveillance on an apartment Austin Ross, 29, was suspected to be in.  Ross left the home and then went back inside and did not respond to commands to come out. Deputies then called out the swat team.

After a 90 minute standoff, Ross surrendered wearing a rubber face mask with his hands in the air.  He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of felony car theft, evading arrest and committing a crime while out on bail. His bail is set at $110,000.

In Late April, a Grover Beach police officer pulled Ross over for a minor traffic violation and discovered he was driving with a suspended license. After spotting a small amount of hashish, the officer searched the vehicle and discovered 83.8 grams of methamphetamine packaged for sale.

The office booked Ross into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of transportation of narcotics and possession of narcotics for sale, as well as misdemeanor charges of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license. He was released shortly afterwards on bail.
