Arroyo Grande could become charter city

arroyo grandeThe Arroyo Grande City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place an initiative on the November ballot that will allow voters to make Arroyo Grande a charter city. [Tribune]

Becoming a charter city allow Arroyo Grande officials to draft their own rules on election procedures, contract bidding and purchases of goods, property and services. As a general law city, Arroyo Grande must currently defer to state regulations on such procedures.

In 2012, a charter city measure failed in neighboring Grover Beach by a mere four votes. The initiative faced stiff opposition from unions, particularly over a section that would have exempted the city from paying prevailing wage on construction projects funded by local revenue streams.

A similar provision exists in the draft Arroyo Grande charter. Unions are expected to oppose Arroyo Grande’s initiative as well.

I have lived in a chartered city and a general law city, and I think a small city like AG could really get in some trouble with being a charter city.


I fear them not balancing a budget and putting us into fiscal downfall should and when we go into another recession. Charter cities do not have to live within their means.


Chartered cities like Santa Clara do well because they own their own electrical power company and they can count on income from that, no matter what. Cloud and computer company’s use ALOT of power . What does AG have to guarantee revenue, tourist?


They say taxes won’t go up, I believe that and “the check is in the mail”. AG has already tried to get us to pay more for the fire dept, and build a new police dept. Come on they need money and they will say anything up front to get us to believe them. Then once they get it all bets are off, and there is no turning back.


They did not present anything to me that makes me want to vote yes on this.

You nailed it; vote NO on everything that doesn’t pass the smell or reason test. (And, sorry for the NESTED parentheses when quoting you – – can’t forget my young days writing code where my grizzled mind could “nest” operational parentheses as many levels deep as I wanted.


As an aside and addressing your post, cities shouldn’t count on “income” from owning a power company. MARKING UP electrical production or distribution above costs is just another TAX on the over-taxed public. The City of LADWP Board are world grand-masters at it.


Aside # 2: Get your own solar panels, baby. My ranch PG&E bill is whatever I want it to be, usually about $ 9.00. I depend on PG&E only for nighttime power and the timing signal for my inverters during the day. Such a deal !
