An 11-year-old Morro Bay boy died Friday evening after drowning in a lagoon at a private party near San Miguel.

Michael Derick Gallegos had been swimming with other children at Star Farms, located southeast of San Miguel, around 5:30 p.m. Gallegos then went missing for about 10 minutes, prompting a 911 call.

Individuals at the event located the boy, brought him to shore and initiated CPR as San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputies responded. The deputies continued CPR and rushed Gallegos to Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton.

But, doctors determined that he had succumbed to injuries resulting from the drowning. They pronounced Gallegos dead at 10:41 p.m.

The county coroner’s unit is conducting a further investigation into the death.

Children are so precious it defies description. When their little lights leave so suddenly and tragically, many hearts share the pain. Mine does, and even though I do not know this child or the family, I still feel an ache in my heart. Maybe our hearts all share the burden….for it is just too much otherwise….
