Trade guns for Vons gift cards in Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Police Department will host a gun buyback program from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Earl Warren Showgrounds parking lot. Participants can anonymously turn in handguns rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition.

Police will issue $100 gift cards in exchange for functioning handguns and $200 cards for firearms classified that California classifies as assault weapons.

“This is not about gun control,” Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez said. “This is about getting guns out of people’s homes that are not necessary, that they want to get rid of, that they don’t know what to do with, that they just feel they don’t need anymore.”

Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider also touted the buyback at a press conference about the program.

“There are many things that different government agencies can do on a variety of levels to reduce gun violence in our community, and this is one of them,” Schneider said.

The event Saturday will be the first buyback in Santa Barbara County.

Interesting article from Feb 2014: “Even when they bring in impressive stockpiles of firearms, they rarely get the ones most sought by law enforcement.”

And “Unfortunately, there is NO COMPELLING EVIDENCE that gun buyback programs are an effective crime-fighting tool or that they reduce the rates of crime,’’ said Jon Vernick, co-director of Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.

Another feel-good program (“Yay! Look at us! We’re taking guns off the streets!”) that does nothing to truly fight crime.

Personally I don’t mind them wasting their efforts on this. If it makes them feel good, maybe they will back off a bit on the constant push to make life harder for responsible and committed gun owners.

This program needs a catchy name like the automobile swap “cash for clunkers”

    Maybe “Groceries for Glocks”?

    Any other suggestions.

Um…This is EXACTLY about gun control, Chief Sanchez. Please just be honest.

The ironic thing is that not one gang member will be in line to turn in HIS weapon. Not one wife/husband abuser…not one drug dealer…not one criminal is dumb enough to turn in a weapon.

This IS about taking guns from law-abiding folks who are naïve and/or financially desperate enough to turn in their weapons for a paltry gift card.

A great opportunity to trade a $1,500 item for $100! Private buyers will probably be working the queue offering much more.

Makes me wish I was a licensed gun dealer. I would offer a 100% premium over the Von’s cards in cash.

If this was really “not about gun control”, SB law enforcement could have facilitated a buy-back by licensed dealers which wouldn’t have cost taxpayers a dime.

Anyone can work out a purchase. Both parties just need to perform the transaction at a dealer.

        That’s the problem.

YOU are part of the problem.

Decent, intelligent SOCIETY will catch up to you and your sociopathic utopia…one way or the other.
Probably by your own hand, though.

        I won’t cry, either way.

        Suuuure, that’ll work.

“I’ll be happy to give you $200.00 for the Remington.” Just follow me to XYZ gun shop where we can do the transfer. If they aren’t busy and if they’re not in a snarky mood, the whole process from the time we leave should only be an hour.”

Did Vons donate the gift cards or are the taxpayers buying the guns?

Guns?! Why can’t we hand in our knives and cars for gift cards?

The police chief says, “This is about getting guns out of people’s homes that are not necessary.” How many extra knives do people have? I can bet you any day and dollar there are many knives in homes that aren’t used everyday.

Since a car and knife injured and killed more than a gun in the Isla Vista killings, we’re aiming at the wrong weapon. No more cars! No more knives! No more cars! No more knives!

Yeah, turn in your non DOJ approved assault weapon that has more than a 10 round clip, and take the chance of being illegal and arrested by being a goody-two-shoes? Fools.

“If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed. If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed. He should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.” (Exodus 22:2-3)

“A righteous man who falters before the wicked is like a murky spring and a polluted well.” (Proverbs 25:26)

Jesus sets an example for ALL Christians in that He says we’re to be armed in the same vein as firearms today. “…But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a sack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one” (Luke 22:36)

Any Christian that would turn in their guns and be without them is a candy-ass and is slapping our Hebrew God and Jesus right in the face! They would be faltering before the wicked to be unarmed, therefore unable to resist any assailant who might threaten their lives.
