Immigrant detention center expanding in Southern California

July 9, 2014

immigrationU.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) is adding beds to the largest immigrant detention center in Southern California. [LA Times]

The detention center in the high desert town of Adelanto, 40 miles north of San Bernardino, currently has the capacity to house 1,300 men. A construction project is underway that will add 650 beds, including a women’s housing unit.

ICE officials say that an increasing number of immigration arrests are occurring in the Los Angeles area. ICE tries to house the detainees near the areas of their arrests.

A Florida based company called the GEO Group runs the detention facility in Adelanto. GEO contracts with the city of Adelanto, which has an agreement with ICE to house the detainees.

Adelanto, which has an 18 percent unemployment rate and a $2.6 million budget deficit, earns 75 cents per day from GEO for every detention bed filled. City officials support the expansion of the facility because it would boost the city’s struggling economy.

“It takes an existing facility, expands it, and creates more jobs,” City Manager Jim Hart said. “That’s a financial benefit for the city.”

Adelanto is also home to a San Bernardino County jail and a state prison.

Immigrant advocacy groups oppose the detention center expansion. They say detainees receive poor quality food, inadequate health care and not enough time to work on their cases.

“Resources should go to help the children seeking asylum, not to grow private prisons,” said Luis Nolasco of the Justice for Immigrants coalition.

Are all of the pseudo-christian hypocrites in this thread, that disparage these innocent children running from their countries violence and abuse, happy that this Mexican train derailed with many of them on board?

I am with you, Brother Ted. It is sad and ironic, but TYPICAL, that those who are preaching something are the LEAST likely to live up to what they’re preaching if it threatens their own self interest or even HINTS at threatening their own self interest.

People are PEOPLE. Maybe overpopulation will become our burden with this philosophy but then it will be a burden worth having. If it bothers you (all of you, in general) that these people might come and use our services, STOP the SERVICES! If it bothers you that they will take your jobs, GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS. If it bothers you that they won’t learn to speak the language, most of you quite honestly don’t know how to form independent thoughts into coherent, original sentences without cliche’s anyway. And it never seems to bother you when it’s the old Italian or German woman who won’t learn the language.

People will only take advantage of you as much as you let them. These people have as much of a right to freedom and opportunity as any of you entitled whiners. If you don’t want to get taken advantage of via your tax dollars being spent on services you don’t want to offer them, GET CONTROL OF YOUR GOVERNMENT, for once, and quit blaming your problems on other people while you simultaneously claim to be Christian and believe in freedom.

Your proposal is “pie-in-the-sky” if one is an assumed Christian, because ALL, and I repeat, ALL of the Hebrew God’s creation are to be taken care of, regardless of their origin, as in the case of children coming across our borders as I have biblically shown in a post below.

    See CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/09/politics/obama-texas-immigration-visit/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Yesterday, July 9, 2014, Obama refused to visit Texas facilities where children are
being processed and detained because his visit would be little more than a photo
opportunity. In paragraph four, Obama is quoted as saying “There’s nothing that is
taking place down there that I am not intimately aware of and briefed on. This isn’t
    theater. This is a problem.”

It occurred to me that if Michelle Obama was on a tour in let’s say, Idaho, promoting
better eating habits for children and was involved in a serious automobile accident in
which she sustained major, life-threatening injuries, would Obama send one of his
cabinet members to visit his wife in lieu of a personal visit? Absurd. Unthinkable.

We have a humanitarian crisis of indescribable magnitude, and the President just
yesterday opted out of seeing it with his own two eyes, even though he was a mere
“stone’s throw” away from the border. Obama says he’s “intimately aware” of the
situation. Really? Would he say the same about his theoretically-injured wife, relying
on his aids’ account of how Michelle is faring? Would daily phone briefs with Michelle’s medical team be satisfactory?

What further inaction is needed for proof? The president doesn’t care – it’s all about
him! If you voted for Obama for whatever motive, what you see is what you get.

      Mariposa,

The president can’t bar people from applying for political asylum. Those guidelines are set by the United Nations Refugee Convention, which the United States has signed.

Obama also can’t just eliminate judicial review for people ordered deported because such a move would violate the Constitution.

Obama can’t load up all undocumented immigrants on a bus and deport them without some sort of legal hearing. That type of action also would violate the law that George W. Bush signed into action in 2008!!! Get it?!

Obama can’t create a direct immigration policy on his own, even though he can take executive action in small parts to help the situation because the Republicans are not helping in this respect whatsoever other than to do absolutely NOTHING but complain about it.

Obama needs CONGRESS and the GOP to enact the immigration policy that was already approved by the Congress and Senate, but is sitting in Congress as we speak not being allowed for a vote because Boener insidiously states that he is afraid that Obama won’t follow it! Yes, that is the excuse the GOP renders at their expense as we watch innocent children cross our borders! Comical, isn’t it?

I would suggest that you get away from “Faux News” for actual FACTS upon this immigration situation. You can thank me later.

What a phony strawman argument !
The comprehensive immgration reform bill supported by President Obama and the administration has been blocked for years by the House Republicans !
Obama and the administration have been following the law as passed by the Bush administration in 2008.

      Republicans are the enemy.

Don’t give one dime to this problem. Homeland Security has a $500 BILLION budget item for defending the border under siege that will be unused by October. Also. Health Services has a $175 MILLION budget item balance for addressing illegals (aka undocumented) health care services.

This can be solved with a dime: Everyone like Brother Ted that wants these illegals here could adopt an illegal, sign a document whereby they will be financial, physical, and socially responsible for the person they adopt. No cost to the taxpayer and you can gain your grace and a pathway to heaven and your savior. You can follow the beatitudes. Problem solved!

      SLOBIRD,

Praise your godly enlightenment! You’re correct, its about time Christians start following their bibles to the letter when our Hebrew God and Jesus state that we’re to take care of them as in the case of these innocent children that are coming across our borders.

Within the same vein, since the Christian faith is against birth control, then they should be willing to adopt ALL children born where birth control was taken away from the mothers, or where they couldn’t afford the type of birth control needed. In other words, put their faith where their mouth is!

As you’re aware, I don’t have much room in my Salvation Bus parked down by the river. So I am exempt from your notion that I should be taking care of God’s children in this respect.

Where do the Christians sign up?

IT IS BLATANTLY DISGUSTING TO SEE ALL OF THESE UNCHRISTIAN LIKE COMMENTS REGARDING THESE POOR CHILDREN RUNNING FROM THEIR COUNTRIES VIOLENCE!!!

What has this Christian Nation become? Look at this stories thread with its pseudo-christian hypocrites that don’t even begin to follow the direct word of the Hebrew God and Jesus the Christ! All of you “assumed” Christians posting your Satanic Devil Speak against these unfortunate kids are destined for Hell upon your demise, and I praise the Hebrew God for His revenge in this respect!

READ YOUR BIBLES FOR A CHANGE! WWJD?!

“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” (Proverbs 14:31)

“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.” (Psalm 82:3)

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” (Proverbs 19:17)

“But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” ( Luke 14:13-14)

“If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you.” ( Leviticus 25:35-36)

Jesus said: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless.” ( Proverbs 31:8)

“For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’ (Deuteronomy 15:11)

Rambunctious, Mr. Holly, Shelworth, Old Salt, et al, you make God and Jesus sick, and you will pay upon Judgment Day, that is for sure!

    Foolish pseudo-christian hypocrites!

Fly them to Chicago or Washington DC… The White House can house a couple of hundred of the ILLEGALS.

What parent would allow their children to go with coyotes across 2-3 countries, get molested, beat, infected and all so they can get to the USA.

When they load the plane, turn it towards the capital of their home country. They are not are problem. We send millions/billions to these countries to help solve their social problems. If we keep the kids and their families stop financing these countries.

We need to deal with these problems, not pander to them.
