Shark spotted in Avila Beach

July 21, 2014

sharkA fisherman reported seeing a great white shark near the Avila Beach Pier early Sunday afternoon.

The shark was swimming just south of the pier around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Cal Fire. The great white was reported to be between 10 and 12 feet long.

Officials posted notices warning beachgoers of the shark sighting. They did not advise people to stay out of the water, though.

The report marked the third shark in sighting in San Luis Obispo County this month.

On July 5, a shark bit a surfboard that a surfer was riding in Oceano. Later that same day, a shark was reported to be swimming in Pismo Beach.

The problem with posting a warning is that folks will think that when there isn’t a posted warning that there are no sharks around.

Posting warning about sharks in the ocean is stupid and believing that there are no sharks around is also stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does

I try to live by the adage “big ocean, small target”. Hopefully sharks don’t like stand up paddle boards.
