The board is requesting Dr. Aria Omar Sabit surrender his license to practice medicine in California. Sabit, who is currently practicing medicine in Michigan, agreed to surrender his license on Monday.

During 18 months that spanned portions of 2009 and 2010, Sabit performed surgeries at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. His employer then fired him and dozens of people sued.

The California Medical Board contends Sabit committed gross negligence during spinal surgeries, made claims in medical records of doing things he did not do, and repeated unneeded procedures.

In addition to the licensing issue, Sabat is being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department regarding allegations he received kickbacks for implanted spinal devices he allegedly used in surgeries. He was a founding member in Apex Medical Technologies, the company that distributed the medical devices he used.
