October 10, 2014

truck explodesA 25-year-old Santa Maria man who was driving a semi truck carrying vegetables that exploded late Wednesday night on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo managed to escape the vehicle unharmed before it caught on fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Adrian Barriga’s truck hit the center median of Highway 101 near South Higuera Street and collided with the guardrail. The semi then struck a concrete bridge over-crossing and came to a stop partially hanging off the overpass above South Higuera Street.

The big rig then burst into flames, and Barriga escaped the cab.

The crash backed up and rerouted Highway 101 traffic for much of Thursday morning.

I got stuck in the north-bound traffic from Pismo to SLO and it took about two hours to drive that 10-minute stretch. Was insane.

Previously, I had taken the “back road” to AG (227) and it was solid bumper-to-bumper coming into SLO… wow, from the airport all the way to the bottom of the “hill” in AG (just before freeway).

Crazy stuff. The whole time I just imagined what would happen if we needed to evacuate. We’d be screwed.
