Higginbotham out, Waage in Pismo mayoral race

Pismo Beach Mayor Shelly Higginbotham has said she will not seek reelection in November, and Councilman Ed Waage has announced he is running for the mayoral seat.

Higginbotham has served as mayor for three two-year terms and was previously a Pismo Beach councilwoman and parks commissioner. Last year, she entered the race for District 3 San Luis Obispo County supervisor, but dropped out after alleged bullying by incumbent Supervisor Adam Hill.

Waage has served on the Pismo Beach council since 2008. He lost to Hill in the 2012 county supervisor race.

In 2011, Waage gained countywide attention when he challenged the science of the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District’s controversial Oceano Dunes dust rule. Waage sits on the APCD board and he has a PhD in chemistry.

Waage’s council seat is up for election in November. The seat that belongs to Councilman Erik Howell is also up for election.

Howell said he will run for reelection. Howell is also a member of the California Coastal Commission.

Shelly’s attitude to my neighborhood was one reason I just sold and moved out to the county. A friend told me that “Pismo is getting more like San Luis Obispo”. That’s the reason I didn’t build in my hometown. (The “Death Tax” is the reason I couldn’t afford to keep my parents home.)

And the good news in Arroyo Grande is Mayor Hill has pulled his intent to run papers.

Saw Mr. Waage at the SSLOCSD meeting last Wednesday, I may have to ask my friends in Pismo Beach to ask him whether he supports Mr. Wallace, even though our issue isn’t directly connected to Pismo Beach it would be a good indicator of Mr. Waage’s character to know if he supports Wallace.
