Murder suspect shoots himself in Santa Maria

Santa Barbara sheriffA homicide suspect from Oakland barricaded himself inside a white van at a Santa Maria truck stop on Friday morning before shooting himself during a standoff with law enforcement. Calstar personnel transported the injured suspect to a local hospital where he is being treated for a single gunshot wound.

The man is suspected of murdering a 30-year-old Oakland man on Thursday morning, according to officials.

At 5:45 a.m. on Friday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff deputies located the suspect’s vehicle at a truck stop near Highway 101 and Betteravia Road. After the suspect barricaded himself in his vehicle, the standoff began.

Officers closed off the area and evacuated Pappy’s Restaurant, a gas station and the truck stop. For about 3 ½ hours, deputies attempted to talk the man into surrendering before they heard a single gunshot.
