Shandon woman killed in Atascadero crash

July 25, 2016

CHP@CORRECTION: The crash occurred in Atascadero not Templeton.

A 29-year-old Shandon woman died in a crash on Highway 101 in Atascadero early Monday morning, according to the CHP.

At approximately 4:35 a.m., the woman was driving northbound on Highway 101 south of San Diego Way at a high rate of speed when her Toyota Camry drifted from its lane and onto a dirt embankment. The woman then attempted to turn left back onto the highway, but she over corrected and lost control of her car.

The car then traveled back onto the dirt embankment, became airborne, crashed into a freeway exit sign and then an oak tree. Because the woman was not wearing her seat belt, she was partially ejected during the crash.

Emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding the victim’s name until her relatives have been notified.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Officers have not ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the crash.

Perhaps she was dodging an animal in the road. There are deer on the freeway in that area from time to time. Sad whatever happened.

People still don’t wear seat belts? I don’t get it. Are they a real hassle to put on?

Texting while driving????

Where did this accident occur? There’s a San Diego Way exit at the South end of Atascadero, but I don’t know of any similarly named exit in Templeton.

There is no “San Diego Way” exit in Templeton…
