Deyo Dances at Spanos Theater in San Luis Obispo
Deyo Dances Presented by Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo
Friday, April 13th at 8pm and Sunday April 15th at 7pm at the ALEX & FAYE SPANOS THEATRE
Deyo Dances returns to the Spanos with two world premieres: My Village and DYLMH(a). My Village incorporates traditional Catalan folksongs with contemporary jazz and pop to illustrate the interconnected parts of a village. DYLMH(a), pronounced 'dilemma', comes from two ideas: conversations between two parties speaking different languages and the "Do you like my hat?" schtick in the book, Go Dog Go. Live musicians and dancers mix it up with varying outcomes.
Lisa Deyo's community piece, The Red Shoes, is a re-working of a piece she created, commissioned by Renee Capen. The idea came to her when Lisa noticed the reaction of women of all ages to her daughter's sparkly red shoes. This piece celebrates that youthful joy in all women that we never outgrow.
Also in the performance will be Sketches On the Spectrum, originally created and performed with Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo for their Arts For Autism Gala presented last April in the Cohan Center. Originating in a concept by Theresa Slobodnik, Lisa choreographed this ballet as an expression of the autistic experience from both the inside and outside.
Directed by Lisa Deyo, Deyo Dances was formed in 2002 as the result of a successful tour to St. Petersburg and Pskov, Russia.
*These performances are made possible through the non-profit umbrella of Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo.
