Richard Phipps was born in Los Angeles, raised in San Gabriel, CA.  He studied with figurative artists Howard Warshaw and Rico Lebrun at UCSB; won a Ford Foundation Scholarship and a full tuition scholarship to Yale University Summer School of Art, where he studied printmaking with Gabor Peterdi and painting with Ilya Bolotowsky and Milton Resnick.  He earned a B.A. Degree with Honors from UCSB in 1964, attended Graduate School at UCLA, then with a Graduate T.A. in drawing, completed an M.F.A. Degree from UCSB in 1968.

Richard worked for Walt Disney Productions in 1958 as a caricature artist; a studio artist and ad writer in 1959 for KEY-TV in Santa Barbara.  He traveled in Europe in 1960-61; served in the U.S. Army Artillery as an intelligence analyst in field operations in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  He lived in Mexico, near Guanajuato, in 1964-65, returning to Santa Monica and then to Montecito where he had a studio for 22 years.

Phipps has exhibited with gallery representation in Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as galleries in Santa Barbara, Pasadena, and Fresno.  He’s shown at museums in Southern California and Ohio.  His works are in private collections nationwide.  He’s instructed painting and drawing at UCSB, S.B. City College, College of Creative Studies, UCSB, Cal Poly, SLO, and at Cuesta College since 1990.  Richard is married to artist Tika Solnar Phipps, their home and studios are in Baywood Park.
