A new musical
Book & Lyrics by Steven Sater
Music by Duncan Sheik
Based on the play by Frank Wedekind
In Germany 1891, beautiful young Wendla explores her changing body and asks her mother where babies come from. Brilliant and fearless student Melchior defends his buddy Moritz -- a boy so caught in the trauma, confusion, and desperation of puberty he can't concentrate on anything. One afternoon in the woods, Wendla and Melchior discover a desire unlike anything they've ever felt. In the whirlwind of their emerging desires, the teenagers, boiling with passion and roiling with guilt, also discover the beauty and risks of naiveté when their forbidden longings lead to tragic consequences. Winner of 8 Tony Awards,Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's 1891 censored expressionist play about the exhilaration, trials, and tribulations of teens and the price of coming of age.
