Cal Poly Jazz Night Concert
Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands will present their end-of-season concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.
“The jazz bands are capable of a wide variety of musical styles, from swing to contemporary, so there should be something for everyone at this concert,” said Paul Rinzler, director of jazz studies at Cal Poly. “Also, any jazz concert will feature improvisation quite strongly, so there is always the element of the unexpected.”
Two full big bands " with four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a rhythm section and vocalist " will create the “wall of sound” for which big bands are known. The more intimate side of jazz will also be on display when the two Cal Poly jazz combos take the stage.
