SLOMA Workshop: The Essentials of Drawing with Shirley Hazlett at San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
In this workshop occurring from June 21 to June 22 students will obtain a firm grasp of the basics of drawing such as line, negative space, highlight, and shadow that can be translated to painting, illustration, sketching, and other visual art forms.
All materials are included ��" students need only bring a sense of curiosity! This course is perfect for beginners with little to no visual art training as well as more experienced artists seeking to sharpen their realistic drawing skills.
Morning: Welcome & introductions. Pre-instruction assessment drawings - timed & stored by instructor until final session as a “snapshot” of student’s skill level/comprehension/tool usage prior to instruction. Drawing from the left/right brain mini-lecture.
Afternoon: “LINES.” Mystery bags, modified (“blind”) contour lines, and pure contour line drawings
Morning: “SPACE.” Contour lines & negative space
Afternoon: “LIGHT & SHADOW.” Bringing it all together! Gesture drawings, contour/negative space, adding highlight and shadow, and using graphite ground. Students will leave the course with a finished black & white drawing of an object incorporating line, negative space, highlight, and shadow.
