San Luis Obispo Chamber’s Green Awards, event photos

November 18, 2010

Six diverse local businesses and organizations were recognized at the 2010 San Luis Obispo Chamber’s Green Awards on Monday for working hard to be sustainable.

This year’s winners were Elemental Herbs, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, Solarponics Energy Systems INC, San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, Avila Bay Athletic Club & Spa, and Tolosa Winery, and the luncheon was held at Embassy Suites Hotel, a recent 2010 CalRecycle Waste Reduction Award Program winner.

“It was the Chamber’s priority to be as green as possible for this event, so we focused on reusable materials and recyclables – guests used all real dishware and flatware, linen napkins instead of paper, there were no printed programs, and the nomination and marketing processes was 100 percent online,” said John Ewan, 2010 Green Awards emcee and chairperson for the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

This year’s keynote speaker was Kanal Consulting founder and Chief Consultant Vijay Kanal, who has more than 20 years of consulting experience and, earlier this year, co-authored a study of best practices for sustainability among 25 leading corporations. Kanal counts Sun Microsystems, Autodesk and Hewlett-Packard among his clients.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is the major sponsor of the 2010 Green Awards. Other sponsors include the City of San Luis Obispo, REC Solar, First Solar and Ride-On Transportation.
