Election is just one day away

June 2, 2014

voteThe 2014 California primary election will take place Tuesday, and several local offices are up for grabs.

San Luis Obispo County’s testiest races are the battles for the District 4 county supervisor seat and the district attorney’s seat. Appointed incumbent Caren Ray and challengers, businesswoman Lynn Compton and real estate broker Mike Byrd, are running for the supervisorial seat, while Assistant District Attorney Tim Covello and Deputy District Attorney Dan Dow are battling to become the county’s chief prosecutor.

Other contested seats include the offices of District 2 county supervisor and Morro Bay mayor. Board chairman Bruce Gibson is facing a challenge from Cambria CSD Director Muril Clifty for the District 2 seat, and first term Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons is campaigning against former councilwoman Carla Wixom.

Of the four races, only the District 4 campaign stands much of chance of extending until the November general election. But, if one of the candidates receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the race will end Tuesday.

Tuesday’s election will mark California’s second cycled in the open primary system, which took effect after voters approved former lieutenant governor Abel Maldonado’s 2010 ballot initiative. Voters can choose candidates for statewide office regardless of party registration, and the top two overall finishers in each race will advance to November, no matter their party affiliation.

Polls open Tuesday at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will close at 8 p.m. Those who have registered to vote by mail but have not yet returned their ballots may still do so by dropping off their ballots at the county government center prior to polls closing.

County election workers will begin tallying votes as soon as polls close and expect to finalize all results by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. CalCoastNews will provide live updates as election returns are processed.

Time for the rubber to meet the road.

Speak with your vote.

Then ACCEPT the will of the majority, win or lose. Oh, and should you lose…hush.

I haven’t been this excited since Christmas Eve when I was 10! All of these incredibly gifted people running for the opportunity to restrict our liberties, confiscate our property, and line their own pockets!

achillesheal………..AMEN!!!!!!. That should have been the slogan for the duo running together for Mayor and council in Morro Bay, Irons and Makowetski. I think I spelled the guys name Makowetski right? You know…… the guy that spent many a summer fishing on his dad’s boat but did not know the name of it…..yeah….that guy.

“You know…… the guy that spent many a summer fishing on his dad’s boat but did not know the name of it…”

Please tell me you’re not basing your vote on THAT. If so, you deserve to have your right to vote revoked.

His point is that the politician is a liar and didn’t know the name of his father’s fishing boat because he had actually, in all likelihood, never worked on it. If you work on a fishing boat even for a day, you know the name.

Like when John Kerry congratulated the great Red Sox slugger “David Ramirez” (a combination of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez) while running for President and claiming to be a Red Sox Fan.

All he’s saying is these fools running for office should be genuine and stop lying to try to make themselves appear how they perceive their voters want them to appear.

Be grateful.

Some Republicans in Iowa think that having been a pig castrator is a qualification for high public office !

And as you have so proudly and publicly stated here: YOU DON’T VOTE .

Why should anyone care anything about whatever you posit ?

You obviously do if you’ve responded 3 times to one comment.

“All of these incredibly gifted people running for the opportunity to restrict our liberties, confiscate our property, and line their own pockets!”

I’m really interested…What ‘liberties’ have you had restricted ? What ‘property’ of yours has been confiscated ?

Please be specific.

As for ‘lining pockets’, I will quote President Harry S. Truman: ” An honest public servant can’t become rich in politics …he can only attain greatness and satisfaction by service”.

Your kidding right?

Earned income is personal property. I’ve had more than my “fair share” of that property confiscated and flushed down the toilet at the federal, state, and local level.

As flor liberites – pick any law you want as the majority are a form of restricting a freedom that previously was not restricted – from Obamacare which restricts liberties by forcing individuals to purchase insurance or pay fines, or the ban on plastic bags or homeowners being required to install new plumbing fixtures.

California began 2014 with 800 new laws. Do any of those enhance our freedom or put money back in our pockets?

BTW: Harry Truman is dead. The new politician says pay up sucker and passes the cash along to whom he owes favors.

“Earned income is personal property. I’ve had more than my “fair share” of that property confiscated and flushed down the toilet at the federal, state, and local level.”

Ahhh…the dreaded TAXES ! How much ?

Are you protected by the National defense system ( the military ) ? That’s where most tax dollars go.

Do you drive on the roads ? Have your garbage collected ? Send ( or sent ) your kids to free, public education ? Rely on police, firefighters, and the judicial system ?

If you don’t, or never have, used any of these public facilities; then you might have a gripe.

My suggestion, move to a libertarian eutopia such as Somalia or Myanmar.

I’m sure that you’ll be much happier.

You left out a few things – government pensions, welfare benefits, president’s dogs flying in helicopters, IRS conferences and videos, Billions of dollars in “stimulus” to political donors who’s companies go bankrupt.

I used to work for government at the state level. The theft from taxpayers was mindboggling.

By the way, for which branch of Government do you work?

Talking to yourself again ?

Never mind…I know that simple things are confusing to you.

I’m a member of the Fourth Estate.

That should keep you occupied for hours.

It will be a good day if Caren Ray and Bruce Gibson both lose, that is what is bringing me to the polls tomorrow

“It will be a good day if Caren Ray and Bruce Gibson both lose, that is what is bringing me to the polls tomorrow”

How could you possibly vote against both ?

Perhaps this is one of those extremely rare cases of voter fraud.

Like appointed is negative and businesswoman is good? Compton would be “appointed” if her application for the job was acceptable. It wasn’t and she lost.

It was a political appointment by a Democrat. I doubt if a Republican would even have been considered regardless of their resume.

Compton was considered. She was in the final running, and she lost.

because she was not a democrat

Because she was (and still is) unqualified. No experience. No understanding of the duties and responsibilities.

according to you she is unqualified. Thanks to Gibson, Ray AND Hill I am not voting for a democrat as I might normally do, I am voting for who I feel will best do the job. Caren Ray was not qualified she just happened to get appointed time and time again.

Our family h as usually voted democratic as well. This county seems to be run by a huge corrupt crowd, and I am sorry to say it seems to be those of the democratic proportion.

Ha!

Wish that same thinking had been used before we got the 1st and now 2nd second term of Obama.

“unqualified. No experience. No understanding of the duties and responsibilities”.

And I might add, a lawless liar.

Please define “qualified.” Has she not had an affair? Is she not a SLO Hash Harrier? Has she not made a ass of herself? Has she not sought votes by way of “medallions?” Has she not colluded to prevent a quorum? Has she not repeatedly been involved in conflicts of interest?

Has she not imposed a gag order on those who would protest fracking?

I could go on, and on but what’s the point?

The fact is, given the current political atmosphere in SLO, SHE is probably the MOST qualified to server as Supervisor of District 4.

You forgot that she sat on the Arroyo Grande city council while NOT living in the city, but again it was Ms. Ray so we are suppose to look the other way and forget these things.

I’m not sure I understand your question. My point was, that none of the incumbents are what I would call “qualified” unless that means the aforementioned behavior applies. as a prerequisite.

My guess is, Compton and Clifty would bring MUCH needed change. Irons needs to go as well.
