Citizen’s tip leads to arrests in Grover Beach

Grover Beach police seized guns and drugs Saturday after receiving a tip that two men were possibly using illegal narcotics in front of a business. Officers arrested both of the suspects, one of whom was a felon on probation.

After receiving the tip, officers responded to the 1300 block of Grand Avenue and discovered David John Thompson II, 28, of Morro Bay and Jack Dean Everhart II, 36, of Santa Margarita standing near a vehicle.

Thompson tried to conceal his identity by providing a false name to the police.

During the arrest, officers found Thompson was in possession of methamphetamine packaged for sale, as well as prescription oxycodone pills.

Police determined Everhart was on probation and that his probation contained a clause prohibiting him from possessing any weapons or drugs. Officers conducted a probation search of Everhart and his vehicle and found methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, two hunting knives and a baton-style Taser.

Officers charged Thompson with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale and providing false identification to law enforcement. Everhart is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, possession of less than 28.5 grams of marijuana, being a felon in possession of a stun gun and violating probation.

Police booked both Everhart and Thompson in San Luis Obispo County Jail. Thompson remains in jail with his bail set at $50,000 while Everhart is no longer in custody, according to the county sheriff’s office website.

Grover Beach police said Saturday’s incident was a great example of a citizen seeing something suspicious and reporting it to law enforcement.

It costs us $36,000 a year to keep these guys, and the hundreds of thousands like them, in prison for one year. Just give them the drugs. The War on Drugs is not working any better than Prohibition did. We are spending close to $100 billion a year on cops, courts, and prisons and drug use has not been significantly reduced. DECRIMINALIZE drugs and instead spend the money on public education and rehab.


The crime problems and gangs problems arise because of the high price of drugs and the prices are high because the drugs are illegal. Decriminalize drugs and eliminate the huge profits and you will reduce the huge incentives to commit crimes to buy and sell drugs. It would starve the street gangs and the international drug cartels of their major revenue source.

There is some truth to what you say (especially with Marijuana) but not all drugs are equal in their adverse effects. The theory you provide breaks down when users become irrationally dangerous to society without motivations like addictive desperation or avoiding the law. Meth, “Bath Salts”, and PCP screw up the users heads so badly that they become dangerous without reason and, as such, they should continue to be banned and the providers prosecuted and the users forced to go into rehab — or jailed for the protection of the public.

What you are describing is largely a myth. Alcohol is responsible for more of the behavior you describe than any other drug. PCP nearly always make users completely passive. A quarter of college students are using amphetamines or methamphetamines (prescribed) without significant problems. It is true that certain drugs don’t mix well with certain people, and can have awful effects, but the truth is there is no drug that does that more than alcohol.

And, back on the streets and our poor cops continue to deal with these same sleeze bags week after week. So many of these characters when arrested seem to be on bail but according to stats, LESS PEOPLE ARE IN CASTRATED… Well yea, these commit a crime, get charged get release, get a slap on the wrist, get released and recommit. Why not, nothing to lose!
