Jesus versus Santa Claus

December 18, 2009

11697824_BG1A controversial Christmas lawn display in Nipomo is getting national attention, thanks to stories broadcast on both CNN and Fox News.

KCOY Channel 12 reports that artist Ron Lake has created a display depicting Jesus holding a shotgun over the dead body of Santa Claus. Lake has said publicly that the display is his take on the growing commercialism of Christmas.

Neighbors have complained and want the display removed, but it is on private property. Lake does take the figures down during the evening.

Well after all Jesus was a Capricorn.

This display is over the top but it certainly has prompted discussion of the true meaning of the holiday. What Would Jesus Buy? A movie from Rev. Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. http://www.revbilly.com/

I know that guy! Yes it must be, buddy Jesus AKA Jesus General !!!

How utterly bizarre. Is this Christianity today?

Il Mattino says a bloody-faced Silvio Berlusconi, Pope Benedict XVI with his arm in a sling and pop star Michael Jackson are among the crop of new nativity scene figurines on sale in Naples this year. On sale are also statuettes of escort girl Patrizia D’Addario, who claimed to have been paid to have sex with Berlusconi, Naples schoolgirl Noemi Letizia, whose friendship with the premier caused his wife Veronica Lario to accuse him of consorting with minors and ask for a divorce, and Lario herself.

Yea Nipomo! I wonder if Nipomo Jeezus eats Easter bunnies?

Yeah, that’s about the level of theological sophistication we tend to see around these parts. But the story could fill in some details, e.g., What caliber ammo would Jesus use to kill the mythical saint who brings presents to children?

Hendrik Hertzberg had an interesting item about a new weapon in the “war on Christmas”:
