Reminder: Ramos memorial service set for Saturday

August 1, 2011

George Ramos

A public memorial service to honor journalist and Cal Poly professor  George Ramos has been set for Saturday, Aug. 6 in Morro Bay.

Ramos, 63, died last month after suffering a heart attack in his Morro Bay home.

Friends, students, and colleagues are invited to gather at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, 209 Surf Street, in Morro Bay at 1 p.m. on Saturday. An informal reception will be held afterwards at two of Ramos’ favorite Morro Bay hangouts—Legends at the Circle Inn, 899 Main Street, and at the Fuel Dock, 900 Main Street.

Scheduled speakers at Saturday’s service include Julio Moran of the California Chicano News Media Association, photojournalist Alfredo Araiza, Brian Thurmond from Cal Poly Athletic Media Relations, and former Ramos student Leticia Rodriguez. Lisa Rizzo of CalCoastNews also read excerpts from articles written by Ramos.

The service is being organized by his brother Dan Ramos,  Karen Velie and the staff of CalCoastNews, where Ramos served as the editor since 2009.

“People are still in shock at the news about George,” Velie said. “We’re trying to offer something simple, but heartfelt, in order to help people achieve some initial closure. It’s all been very sad, but we’re hoping there can be a few smiles and positive memories on Saturday.”

Any questions should be directed to Karen Velie at 234.1703.

So cool. Thanks Dan, Karen, CCN staff for doing this for us.

I was hoping there would be a public memorial service. That we can hang out at his favorite watering-holes afterwards is good, too.
