January 23, 2010
The Jeep Comanche vehicle belonging to missing San Luis Obispo man George Carpenter was found Saturday morning.
Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies, conducting an aerial search, spotted the vehicle outside the grounds of Fort Hunter Liggett. A ground search by law enforcement revealed that Carpenter was not in the vehicle.
Search and Rescue teams are now combing the area, searching for Carpenter, who has been missing since Dec. 23. There is light snow falling at 2000 feet; Carpenter’s vehicle was found at 3,300 feet.
The discovery of the missing vehicle comes 24 hours after officials announced the discovery of Carpenter’s dog, Scooter, who was with Carpenter at the time of his disappearance. The dog showed up at a home in the woods near Gorda, on Highway 1, and was identified through his dog tags.
Carpenter suffers from dementia.
