Birds 1, Cockfighters 0

Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, was declared dead at a hospital about two hours after he was injured in neighboring Tulare County on Jan. 30, the Kern County coroner said.

An autopsy concluded Ochoa died of an accidental “sharp force injury” to his right calf.

Ochoa and the other spectators fled when authorities arrived at the scene of the fight. Deputies found five dead roosters and other evidence of cockfighting at the location.

No arrests were made at the cockfight.

Cockfighting is a sport, illegal in the United States, in which specially bred roosters are put into a ring and encouraged to fight until one is incapacitated or killed.

Court documents reveal that Ochoa paid $370 in fines last year for training an animal to be involved in cockfightiing.

“I have never seen this type of incident,” said a sheriff’s department spokesperson.

Next time there is a cockfight lets arm the chickens with Uzi’s and point them at the crowd.

This is a well trained bird!

Since when has Lamont become a part of the Cental Coast?

Karma bats last.

It’s my understanding that the chicken now has only one leg.

You shouldn’t eat a bird with such skills all at once.

Lamont is in Kern County. Our cockfighters would never let this happen!! LOL!

Wow, so many people happy that a person died. It’s a very sad time when people are joyful at the death of another human. You people are like the people that wait outside a death chamber and party and laugh while yelling ‘kill emm’. I have a feeling that you’re all ‘good Christians’ that believe in forgiveness, which only makes me more comfortable to be a fairly forgiving non judgemental atheist. What this man did was terrible. Any form of animal abuse is disgusting, but it doesn’t warrant a death penalty, he didn’t kill anyone. The way some of the meat that you eat is handled and slaudered is more gruesome than any cock fight. I only hope that this mans mother or sister doesn’t read all this vengeful hatred.

Why did this guy bleed to death from a cut on the leg? SLORider, you know about this stuff, wouldn’t a tourniquet have slowed the bleeding enough to get him to the hospital? I’ve read about people that have had a limb sliced off yet they didn’t die.

You Go Girl !!!

One would have to surmise they were too drunk or ignorant to have the slightest clue how to stop an arterial bleed; and, given the surroundings, no one was probably too hasty to call 911.

Alternatively, one source says doctors were unable to control the bleeding as well. I suppose it is possible that a severed artery could have retracted up into the patient’s leg to where it would require surgery to access. It doesn’t take too long to bleed out and the hospital probably didn’t have a lot to work with if there were delays in transport.

Use Google and search for “cockfight knives” and you’ll see these knives could are pretty nasty and could very well result in this story, weird as it is.

This makes zero sense. What the ‘H’ is “sharp force injury”?? You don’t die from “sharp force”!! You die from bleeding out.

Yes, well according to the story, one of the razor sharp blades that they put on the rooster cut a main artery in the guys leg when the rooster jumped up at him and your right, he bled out and he died before he could get ER assistance. It’s sad but I think if he had lived he would have kept right on fighting roosters and if they got close to him he would have probably hit them with a bat or something. I have a hard time feeling sorry for the guy, he is mean.

The same fate should happen to all those who participate in the sport. Hope Ochoa died slow and painful like.

I kind of feel the same way about this story that I feel when a thug falls from a freeway overpass while tagging it.

I smile….. with a bit of guilt.

I am laughing and high-fiving Darrwin, without an ounce of guilt
