Arroyo Grande votes for new police station

November 29, 2012

The Arroyo Grande City Council voted 3-2 to on Tuesday to approve the construction of a new police station to be built on a portion of Old Ranch Road and West Branch Street. [NewTimes]

Staff recommended the West Branch location which includes a lot of contingencies. Primarily, it depends on the availability of a site previously approved for a 53,000-square-foot recreational facility for the Five Cities Community Services Foundation, which has encountered funding difficulties.

If the non-profit cannot move forward, the city is hoping to grab the spot. City staff said they should know by March.

Staff reported that a new police station at the West Branch location would cost roughly $5.9 million, which would be offset by revenues from the sale of the current property and possibly grant funding.

Council members Jim Guthrie and Caren Ray dissented noting they preferring a remodel or expansion of the current station on North Halcyon Road.

It isn’t often that I agree with Guthrie and Ray, but they surely got it right this time.

I’d say host a bake sale, but that might be illegal – at least it seemed to be in NY and MA.

I’d love to see this place ONLY cost $5.9 million. Somehow, I doubt they’ll keep it in that range.
