Man killed in motorcycle accident

February 18, 2013

chalkA Lompoc man died Sunday after he lost control of his motorcycle while riding on Highway 227 north of Arroyo Grande.

Fred Garrett Jr, 49, was driving at about 35 miles per hour with a group of motorcyclists when he lost control of his Honda motorcycle and it overturned.

Both Garrett and his passenger Kari Cone, 44, were ejected onto the roadway and taken to a local hospital where Garret died from his injuries. Cone suffered minor injuries.

Both riders were wearing helmets.

So a low speed limit AND a helmet did not prevent death. That is tragic. I am glad the passenger WAS NOT also killed or even seriously injured. I guess Mr. Garrett took the brunt of the impact, which Ms. Cone can forever be grateful for, tragic as it may be.

Rest in peace, Mr. Garrett.
