Love letter to the NRA

April 5, 2013

Pete EvansOPINION By PETE EVANS

Recently the United Nations, those black booted thugs the neo cons hate, passed an arms control treaty (opposed by the National Rifle Association and its selfish allies) in an attempt to manage the obscene weapons traffic over international borders. This huge business has brought unimaginable terror, misery and death to countless millions of people. We have a similar situation here at home to contend with.

For 50 years I’ve watched the gun lobby, led by the NRA, undermine Congressional legislation by frantic lobbying in order to make money from the fear it foments. I have watched in horror as first our defenseless people, including lots of children, are murdered by misdirected cowards and have then seen the merciless and fallacious cowardly NRA evade all responsibility and actually blame the sane minds in government and society of attempting to subvert the constitution.

Guns are everywhere. Many guns and bullets are not regulated and much of the feeble regulation in existence is not effective or enforced. “Until 2006, the president had the power to install a director of the firearms bureau without Congressional approval. But under pressure from gun lobbyists, Congress changed the law that year to require Senate confirmation. Since then, the Senate has failed to confirm any nominee by either President Bush or Mr. Obama as senators who support gun rights have used their powers to delay nomination votes; Mr. Jones is the bureau’s fifth acting director since 2006.” This has led to disorganized regulation and crippled law enforcement.

We all know which party is primarily responsible for reducing or eliminating any safety regulation in this country; they are the darlings of the gun lobby. All the biggest (in fact almost all) donations went to right wing republicans like Bachmann and Boner, though plenty of Dems have been stampeded by the virulent NRA as well.

There is only one exact similarity at all the gun crimes, suicides and accidents in this country or any other. Guns. Only guns. Often the gun is a killing machine such as auto loader long gun or hand gun with large magazine. Sometimes the killer is crazed (whatever that means), sometimes crazy (whatever that means), sometimes just frustrated (like the fruitcake that threatened to shoot anyone who came for his guns (his license to carry was promptly revoked)), sometimes the shooter is just emotionally distraught and the opportunity for disaster was nearby in the form of a gun.

We have all heard the tired old evasions from the NRA and it’s minions-“guns don’t kill, people do.” “Only the mentally ill and criminals kill people.”  “The second Amendment is sacred and gives us the right to have any armaments we want.”

What a load of bull. The liars that spew that line of junk are counting on the public to be dupes, and idiots. I challenge any reader: where would you cut off the weapons that civilians should be able to have? .22 single shot rifle, .303 Enfield deer rifle, BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), bushmaster (semi automatic assault rifle with large magazine), 50 cal machine gun, RPG (rifle propelled grenade launcher- great for bringing down planes), bazooka, small anti tank gun, stinger missile, small helicopter gunship (with a lovely mini/gun of course), F-16 Fighter plane, light destroyer for your bathtub pleasure, aircraft carrier, nuclear sub- what? Where do you cut off the debate on our frantic right to have (thereby lose to theft by stranger or relative) killing machines without any training, license or sense? Wait, I forgot to offer Sherman tanks or Bradley fighting machines. Did I mention a small tactical nuke to take care of that nuisance liberal down the street? How about one of those for the little lady for Xmas? So far I have not heard of anyone on the crazy side who has ever been able, or willing, to answer that simple question, they just want their guns!!!

I think the little people, with perhaps a small appendage they hope to enhance by clinging to a large gun, are just too greedy to listen to any sensible response to a society gone nuts with violence and deadly weapons. All I ever hear is ‘me, me, me’ from the gun nuts when the subject of reasonable gun control is discussed. What a bunch of babies, can’t see beyond their crummy little shortsighted horizons.

What about Gabby Giffords and the others shot to pieces in Tucson? What about all the school kids shot in all those attacks from Columbine to Newtown? The moviegoers in Colorado? What about all the people standing in line in the post offices — former historical favorite place to murder a bunch of innocents? Those who would cling to their guns with ‘their cold, dead hands’ have no conscience; they are sociopaths who have no remorse, shame or guilt.

Like so many other public debates truth has become a stranger, this has degenerated to a simple power struggle between good and evil. I can only hope that for once, good may triumph. We must discover a way to get rid of the avalanche of guns and the idiotic attitudes that have clouded our judgment.

I would like to get in a comment about our sheriff, who has recently licked the ground our local tea party fanatics walk on by pledging to not enforce any federal gun control plan. Good work, top cop! Violate your oath, become a crook in one foolish step, endanger your deputies. It has been my impression that most responsible law enforcement historically favors getting the machine guns and armor piecing ammo) off the streets so that a few more cops will survive any altercations with angry civilians.

“There is no reason that a peaceful society based on the rule of law needs its citizenry armed with 30-round [ammunition] magazines,” states Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck during a March 2, 2011 news conference.” Such magazines transform a gun “into a weapon of mass death rather than a home protection-type device,” Beck notes.) July 13, 2009—After a birthday party shootout involving a semiautomatic AK-47 in which two young people were killed and 10 wounded, Miami Police Chief John Timoney tells ABC News, “For me it’s a no-brainer. These are weapons of war. Under no circumstance do they belong in the cities of America. Now police officers are facing—and citizens are facing—these assault weapons. If we don’t stop it now, what’s it going to look like 10 years from now? Rambo becomes reality.”

I’m so glad I voted for an honest sheriff candidate, a real man, Joe Cortez.

Recently that solidly American terrorist organization, the NRA, suggested in their latest evasion of the slightest responsibility in the carnage that teachers should be trained by the NRA to carry and operate weapons (New rep). What a joke, most teachers do not want that responsibility; they are teachers, not killers. But it led me to dream up a realistic compromise in this dysfunctional debate with mental midgets. What if the NRA (in league with the gummint) trained and licensed every gun owner in the land to safely own, protect and discharge a gun in an attempt to make sure all were mentally competent and emotionally secure enough to actually handle the great responsibility? Combine that with severe penalties for anyone in possession of a gun without said license. What about that, mister hot shot, gun-toting fire breathing gun lobby? Your goods, weapons and bullets, cost us billions each year, while you make billions in profits. Its time for you to get off the corporate welfare line and start paying your way. You are just another fat cat corporate thief feeding at the public trough- pay your way or get out of the way.

The NRA is even against background checks to make sure the absolute fruitcakes/criminals don’t get guns. It opposes ANY attempt to reduce the carnage; it is adamantly against any reform of our nightmare system. It opposes any research into the ramifications of all the unregulated guns in society. The NRA should be outlawed, for it is an outlaw organization. Many NRA members are law abiding, sensible and caring citizens. Many are not. The former should quit that outlaw group and form another with a heart.

I know many respondents will try to kick me into the middle of next week. I urge the sane readers to follow the lack of logic, lack of empathy for victims, and general lunacy of the landslide of vitriol that will spew forth from others. Some will say this message is too angry, too confrontational. Tell that to the parents, children, sisters, brothers and friends of those shot up by guns in our schools, theaters, homes, office buildings and streets. Someone out there come up with answers; I did, where’s yours?

Mr. Evans,

The main issue is that we as a people are regulated by others (whether we want or need it) under the guise of “for our own good” have created an environment of protection (HIPAA) that prevents people with social/mental issues from being exposed during the acquisition of legal firearms.

The “Solution” you keep asking for has been brought to your attention by several people posting in this forum however you discount their views and call them gun nuts ranting about the 2nd Amendment.

Regulating the law abiding citizen is not the answer, consequences for the criminal IS the answer. Before you call people names and waste our time correcting grammatical errors ask yourself these questions;

Who are the people who choose to harm others?

Are they the same people who sell illegal drugs, rob banks, steal property or have mental irregularities?

Will these people, after all these laws are passed (in your opinion) put down their weapons, turn in their ammo clips, stop their criminal activities and all of a sudden become mentally stable citizens?

I agree that the horrendous acts perpetrated on our society by people need to cease however I strongly feel that punishment and consequences should be at the forefront of this change.

Do you honestly feel that gun regulation will prevent criminal acts against society? I ask you to take a step back and give my opinion some real honest thought.

Still no real solutions offered. Only blaming the crooks, crazies and ‘liberals’. I agree the first two need to be kept from guns, the NRA opposes any regulation to effect that. I don’t know why you folks keep parroting the same stuff without offering any method to accomplish any progressive change from the carnage we have going on now.

Get rid of the fascist NRA and we can talk about real solutions. It doesn’t represent you, or me, or the thousands of members. It is a lackey for the gun industry, that has nothing to do with you. You are probably a good, sane and kind citizen but the NRA has stampeded you and others with fear and lies.

Never a waste of time educating folks. If they flip out that is their problem.

Obama and his Administration with (or without) his knowledge has shipped 4000 guns to the criminals….possibly killing more people than the last few mass killings combined! Any you actually believe they have any interest in making anything safer? We are simply voting scum to the royal political class there in Washington. How can anything they propose be anything but suspect?

The solution is to reinstate the death penalty. What I mean is actually carry out the sentences received for those that have been convicted by their peers in a court of law.

Criminals go through a revolving door because our prisons and jails are all over crowded. There is zero fear of the consciences surrounding crimes against humanity.

I think you’ve accomplished your goal of just taking up my time as you really didn’t give my questions credence, all you did was deflect the questions and revert back to the same rhetoric about the NRA being responsible for mass shootings……you’re out of touch sir.

I will say one thing more, you want people to respect your opinion yet you don’t engage and respect others opinions as you demand yours be respected and agreed to. I will no longer waste my valuable time commenting further regarding your opinion piece. Live well and I do hope that you don’t ever have to defend your freedom because with your attitude and disregard for others freedoms, you’ll be standing alone.

(Speaking of parrots…)

Dear Pete,

Congratulations. So you’ve identified the real problem: “Get rid of the fascist NRA and we can talk…”

Guns don’t kill people. The NRA does. This makes total sense and I’m down with you, buddy. Great idea! Just get rid of the NRA and all our problems will be solved. Magically. Just like that! What a sensible solution and I’m surprised no one has thought of it before. I’m so impressed. You’ve added so much to the public dialogue on this issue, I’m sure you will go down in history as an original and creative thinker on this matter.

Of course, I’m sure you’ve never heard of Gun Owners of America, which is where people go when they get tired of the NRA. (Just like I’m sure you’ve never heard of AMAC, one of the places people go when they get tired of AARP.)

You probably also didn’t realize that gun crime is actually down and not up (been watching too much TV/too many movies, Pete)?

You probably also didn’t know that most (if not all) mass shootings involve folks who are addicted to SSRIs (because if they don’t say it on the boob tube, it doesn’t exist, right)?

Ah, waving Giffords and “the children” like the proverbial white flag of surrender. (I wonder where you learned how to do THAT, Pete? Is there an original bone in your body?)

So you probably didn’t know that Giffords was once pro-border-control and favored the 2nd amendment (since you apparently look no further than the Nightly News for your info)?

Ah “The Children.” Let us now feel sorry for The Children and look no further into the matter, right? THIS is the proper way to honor their memories! (Isn’t that how it should be, Mr. I-don’t-know-how-to-question-the-mainstream-media-authorities-and-do-some-digging-for-myself)?

So I’m sure you didn’t know that there was a “drill” of the exact same scenario taking place at the exact same time as the Sandy Hook shooting? (Where have we heard THIS before? 7/7? 911? Why does this keep happening over and over again like a broken record? Operation Gladio, anyone? Oh wait. You didn’t know about it, so it doesn’t exist. Sorry to interrupt your regular programming. We return you now to PARROTTV.)

Ah, yes, dear Pete. Continue your sweet slumber in front of the lulling TV tube that has served you so well and delivered up such savory talking points to trip lightly off your loving lips. No worries. No worries at all.

KimM,

Do you know who this infowars author is?

“(Alex) Jones has been the center of many controversies, such as the one surrounding his actions and statements about gun control after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting,[18] and has accused the US government of being involved in the Oklahoma City bombing[19] and the September 11 attacks”

“… according to The Huffington Post, (Piers) Morgan and others such as Glenn Beck “agreed that Jones was a terrible spokesman for gun rights”.”

Jones is also the operator of several web sites centered on news and information about civil liberties issues, global government, and a wide variety of current events topics. Several of these sites are http://www.infowars.com, http://www.prisonplanet.tv, http://www.prisonplanet.com, and http://www.jonesreport.com.”

Wikipedia

Sounds like you might want to expand your reading and your sources a tad if you want to deliver credible talking points.

KimM says: (Speaking of parrots…)

I am not anti gun but you have lost all credibility by linking to the “News of the world/ National Enquirer” of the internet.

Seriously all credibility lost.

Pete,

Here’s a summary list of the bills (shocking) being proposed – some bills already passed the Assembly this past week. Its amazing to me that after 25 years of being a responsible firearm owner I’ll become a felon overnight if these bills are passed into law.

We are beyond common sense and ‘background’ checks. Thanks Pete for assisting in the complete infringement of the 2nd Amendment. Enjoy as soon your 1st amendment will follow. Goodbye Freedom!

•Banning the possession — not just manufacture and sale — of magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

•Making possession of hollow point bullets and similar “assault bullets” a felony.

•Requiring anyone wishing to buy ammunition to first get a permit by passing a background check.

•Requiring the registration and reporting of all ammo purchases. Limits the number of rounds anyone can have at one time to 500 rounds.

•Requiring all gun owners will have to be licensed like drivers, and will be forced to carry gun liability insurance.

•Banning any gun that has a detachable magazine, and requires a 100% prohibition of all fixed magazines greater than 10 rounds.

•Making all previous grandfathered magazines become illegal, and it will become a felony if you keep one.

•Prohibiting anyone barred from owning a weapon from living in a home where weapons are kept

•Expanding the list of crimes that would bar a person from gun possession.

•Letting the state Justice Department use money from the state’s Dealer’s Record of Sale system to eliminate the backlog of people identified as no longer allowed to own guns but not yet investigated and contacted by law enforcement.

Impressive list. I don’t know about the accuracy though at least one concept is repeated. But if we have laws they should pertain to all of us, all the time. Frankly I wish we were a society where none of this would be necessary but the crazies have made it so. We either have to deal with those people directly or all of us suffer.

Of COURSE you don’t know about the accuracy, Pete, BECAUSE YOU DON’T DO RESEARCH. You can’t be bothered, not even in the Information Age when anyone can access anything with a search engine and the click of a mouse. No, no, it’s much easier to mindlessly regurgitate pre-packaged talking points ad infinitum like all your pop-culture training tells you to do, isn’t it? If it’s not on TV, it doesn’t exist. If a comedian didn’t say it, it’s not the truth. And if it’s not a solution you LIKE, well, sir, it’s just not a solution at all.

KimM, Less about Pete, more about the subject.

Yes we know he wrote it, but it’s not about Kim and Pete.

Still waiting for someone to offer a workable solution to all the mass shootings.

Eliminate all gun free zones, allow trained people to concealed carry, give a stipend pay to specially trained school employees to carry weapons to protect our kids from all threats, and start enforcing the gun laws on the books.

In Mexico, train and arm the townspeople to be responsible for their own safety, and the criminals, who have been given weapons by Obama courtesy of the US taxpayer, will be run out of town because they would lose their power.

How are those real solutions Pete? Please don’t threaten to shoot anyone, it is just a sick thing to say BTW. I bet you thought that you would stir up all kinds of threats and such with this article, so that failing you had to try and create your own?

You should have stopped when you were ahead. Your suggestions aren’t bad for a start, sort of mirrors what I suggested in the article (no one, not one person focused their comments on that offering of mine). But you do suggest vigilante retaliation, not always a bad thing but recognize it for what it is. We hire and train folks to do our killing, they wear uniforms and have rules (not always followed).

The tongue in cheek comment “they ought to be shot” is used by all of us (spoken or not) to express outrage. And frankly, those criminals who would use their elected power to subvert democracy deserve a very harsh punishment, you can use your imagination on that. It’s all relative and I know many of my dear friends reading this drivel would jump on that to ‘get me’; lacking any sane points to rally behind. It was a gift to the ungifted.

The fix to stop these shootings is quite simple.

Good guy(s) with gun(s) shoot bad guy with gun.

Relying upon the government to provide immediate individual security is completely unworkable without assigning 1 cop to each citizen (a silly proposition). You see, we must all step up and be responsible. While this may not be a popular policy with the pro police union crown, it is the only truly workable solution.

When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

-choprzrul

Why should they, Pete? When you’ve offered the only reasonable solution out there: Get rid of the NRA. Problem solved. Next.

So no one is going to come for our guns? Then I suppose we should be thankful that do not live in New York as their new “SAFE” law not only seems to voilate HIPAA Laws but also the 4th and 5th Amendment rights under the Constitution.

Sure… they’ll not come for anything! Trust them! They are just the government.

Really, you’re quoting a comedian? LOL

Comedians say a lot of truth with their routines. Just like Sci Fi gives us a clear look into our culture (a classic example is Stranger in a Strange Land) comedians tell us things in ways we can resonate with that we might not look at because of our damaged egos.

And forgot to say, history gives us a good idea of our future, and what has happened to every disarmed society?

LOL. And here Pete confirms that everything he knows IS from the BOOB TUBE, just like “Chancy Gardner” in “Being There.” How’s that for a pop-culture reference, Pete? Am I speaking your language now? Can you see the truth in the mirror, or, like the above-referenced movie, is it only those of us in the audience who can see it, shake our collective heads and laugh as we exit the theater?

Hey Pete, did you see the mass stabbings today in Texas? Should we ban all knifes or just the ones that you deem are to big or cut to easily? I said it before and will say it again. You want to attack the problem as this or that when the problem you are ignoring is PURE EVIL!!

It’s ‘knives’, plural for knife. To big should be too big, same with to easily.

But we do have an evil problem here, I pointed that out days ago in the article so thanks for supporting me on that. We have many evils to contend with, the latest is the evil Repos who might try to block debate on the coming bills in the Senate. Block debate, prevent any talk, subvert democracy by preventing any discussion. Great folks, they ought to be shot.

Wow really? Grammer? That is your arguement? So does that make you feel like a BIG MAN? If you think that Grammer has any bearing on intelligence YOU are sadly mistaken. Of course your ilk usually is. Then you go after conservatives? You need help Pete. And you last comment they ought to be shot? Talk about a HYPOCRITE!!!

Oh and NO your comment was about good vs evil in a political sense. I am talking in the spiritual sense. I know you lib types usually think you are above God also.

This is a nation of laws, not whatever one calls ‘God’. Speaking and writing one’s native language correctly is always a sign of literacy and intelligence. Noticing errors does not make me feel big, just makes others small.

Well I’m done. I just thank GOD that the majority will NOT let you have your way. Your type is a detriment to society. You are an unhinged, narcissitic little man. Get help.

In linguistics, grammar is the set of structural rules that governs the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given natural language.

Actually the main problem with the comment this refers to is spelling, not grammar. As in grammar, not grammer.

I suppose by losing the gun debate, one can always start up the grammar/spelling debate…

I wouldn’t know, since I have won.

And grammar is the means by which we communicate, lacking good grammar all is lost.

That’s because it makes sense!

Lol, The owners of that website pride themselves on spin marketing:

“We offer not only the power of our proven product category model, but a variety of customizable marketing programs that supply direct traffic, lead generation, thought leadership, brand awareness or any other metric of success that you desire.

We are experts in digital advertising and partner to the manufacturers and distributors in our market who require more than traditional print media or display advertising to deliver the value they expect from an ad campaign. ”

That is called drinking the koolaid or thought leadership as they put it.

There is one thing that always seems to escape the people that want to take our guns or restrict the guns we can own. The reason our founding fathers included the right to bear arms was not for hunting, or home defense or target shooting or murder. It is there to DEFEND OURSELVES FROM OUR OWN GOVERNMENT. If we let other people who don’t understand this start taking our weapons or continue to restrict what weapons we own we will have nothing to keep the government in check. I’m not saying that we need to overthrow the government, but who knows what the future holds and what our children may want for their rights. I’ll bet when I am long dead my kids will wish people like this stopped taking our rights away while I was alive. If guns are outlawed murderers will use knives. If knives are outlawed murderers will use clubs. If clubs are outlawed murderers will use rocks and so on. If a person is a killer, they will use whatever is available to kill. Just because a gun is not in their hand does not mean they will not be a killer. Ever heard of a pipe bomb? A killer could kill many many people with one of those and they are single shot. No reloading required. It IS the person not the tool. I have owned guns nearly my entire life and I haven’t killed one single person with any of them.

Who is more likely to go on a rampage with guns? White male youths with mental problems aged18-25 or the US government run by mostly sane older people of mixed demographics?

My money is on the crazies.

If you REALLY think that you will need to defend yourself using assault weapons against the US Government, you first need mental help and second an education on what weapons and military organization the US government actually has. The fear mongering entities have kept the public in the dark on what weapons one would REALLY need for an attack on the US Government. They have only offered the stock they have and are currently manufacturing and want to sell to you. Besides, think about it, you are one guy or a few friends armed with what you have no matter how sophisticated, going up against the finest military in the world. Yeah, good luck with that.

Why do you think the government would be going after you? What reason? What do you do to warrant their attention?

I don’t doubt that you have many guns and have never killed anyone with them, nor will you. But your mindset doesn’t represent everyone out there. And today’s gun issue isn’t about taking away weapons you already have. Getting mental help for the crazies is a large part of stopping the violence as well as is reducing the number of weapons that can do a huge amount of damage in a short amount of time. If you can’t buy new ones and the old ones eventually fail, there is a reduction in chances to blow away part of a student body or movie theater. So getting mental help for those with an inclination to build pipe bombs is a big part too of reducing the results of violent acts.

There will always be killers among us – just look at the stats on domestic violence. The issue is how many people can you kill in 5 minutes with a deer hunting rifle or handgun vs. a gun with a magazine containing 30 or 60 or 100 rounds — a LOT. A knife or a rock? Not so many.

You make sense and the crazies blast you. Figures. You outline some of the sane arguments for a clear conversation about the mess we’re in, I hope the nut cases will be sent to the benches so real intelligent and compassionate people can work something out.

The NRA platform as supported by so many in our little burg (judging by the ludicrous posts on this site) is outrageous and cruel, based on greed and power mongering. It’s all in the original article.

Has anyone proposed any sort of solution that makes sense? I haven’t seen one. This comment will be the 230th comment, not one credible message from the gun freaks, not one.

Pete, so the freedom movement here has offered a solution many times that has worked for over 200 years: the ability to defend yourself and your family. You, on the other hand, want to give more control to the “authorities”. What is your deal? You will not answer a very legitimate question in regards to gun control! You are just here to sputter and insult instead of any serious thought or conteplation.

I would really like your thoughts and insights on the gun distribution program known as “Fast and Furious” specifically. Do you have a problem with our Government officials buying and sending over 4000 weapons out to criminals? What was the purpose of this program? How many have died due to these actions? Should anyone be held accountable?

Did you read in the LA Times that the Aurora Shooter was on no less than 7 psychotropic drugs….7!

Seems like these drugs are so common have you considered that may be a link even more important than the guns?

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-james-holmes-documents-20130405,0,6067279.story

The linked article says they found sertraline and Clomazepam in his apartment.

I have heard the F and F failed in many aspects, I read the same stuff you might. I know it was well intended but poorly run supposedly. Accountability is always good, in any aspect of our lives. But I, like you, had and have no say over those federal issues. A botched program has no bearing on the nation making some credible and sane choices over the rampant proliferation of very dangerous weapons.

Not to be mean, but you are a naive fool if you believe it was “well intended” and you have way too much faith in the government. And it is very relevant to this discussion because the very scum that are trying to take away our second amendment rights have been caught running a gun distribution program. It has been responsible for at least two deaths of American Officials and countless Mexican nationals. Maybe that is not a big deal to you , but I would wager those 4000 guns in the hands of criminals have been for at least as many deaths as Columbine, Aurara, and Sandy Hook combined! Something like 50,000 people have been killed during the last decade in Mexico (guns are banned there and the disarmed huddle in the darkness in fear) and many of those have been supplied armes by our Peace Prize winning leader who gave the green light for this op.

Well, we aren’t scum and I don’t know enough about the program to comment much. I thought it was designed to track the flow of guns so we could grab the crooks and it got out of control. I do agree that much needs to be done. And no one is trying to take away 2A rights, we seem to have a large disagreement just what they are.
