Morro Bay Council looking to terminate city manager and attorney

September 12, 2013

The Morro Bay City Council has scheduled a special meeting for 1 p.m. Thursday to discuss terminating the city’s manager and attorney.

morro bay plantMorro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons and council members Christine Johnson and Noah Smukler called the special meeting to discuss in closed session the termination of City Manager Andrea Leuker and attorney Robert Schultz.

The meeting will be held at City Hall instead of the Veterans Memorial Building where council meetings are typically held.

Both Leuker and Schultz requested that any complaints or charges against them be heard in open session rather than behind closed doors as is their legal right under the Ralph M. Brown Act.

Leuker, a city employee for 26 years, became the city manager in 2008. Her current annual salary is $152,224 a year. For the past 16 years, Schultz has served as the city’s attorney. His current salary is $151,588 a year.

Oddly enough with the short notice about the meeting about 3 to 350 people showed up fro it, almost all were in favor of leaving Andrea and Rob in their positions, one citizen did stand up and explain to irons and Johnson that they were not chosen because they were liked, it was because they were thought of be the lessor of two evils, meanwhile a letter of intent for recall was being circulated and it apparently explained to Irons that a recall would be going on, also some other lawyers were present and there is thought about Brown Act violations, after all of this the council went into closed door meeting for an hr and a half and mysteriously decided to leave things as they are,for now.

Those three may have signed the end of their careers.

Hey Dan Carpenter,

Maybe you can check with Noah and see how they were able to begin the process of taking out the garbage! Just a thought, but there is a lot of garbage to take out in SLO town!

WTF?????? A little Groupthink maybe? I’m surprised Smukler didn’t step in and stop this. He’s much better (and smarter) than this.

This article is a typical blatant misrepresentation of the truth. Mayor Irons called the special meeting… Noah and Christine were brought in as council in the exact same manor as Nancy and George. This was Irons show, which was clearly shown by the majority vote against the decision to terminate the Attorney’s and Manager’s employment.

For all of you who condemned Noah and Christine during this entire process… they both clearly stated they would “Listen to the public comment before making a decision” today, and have now voted to take no action against the two employees. WHY are you auto-grouping them with Mayor Irons? Being elected under the same moon doesn’t automatically mean perfect common allegiance. Yes… they all have the same common goal of creating a better Morro Bay for tourists AND residence alike, but that doesn’t mean that they are a single symbiotic monster stomping through the tides of Morro Bay.

One person called this action into place… not 3. If you feel this is a blatant attack on the prior regime, then direct your comments to the individual that created this media circus… not the other two that were elected by their own merits (one of which was RE-elected).

(drop mic… walk away)

(pick mike back up…)

Also, I voted for Jaime. He is an extremely intelligent, focused and forward-thinking man who would NEVER have gone down this road (potentially ruining his future as Mayor) if he didn’t feel there was merit. He sees inner-workings that the public has no view of and based his choices on those perspectives. I stand by his actions. Good or bad.
