May 17, 2014
Cal Poly beat Cal State Northridge 6-3 Saturday afternoon to clinch its final weekend series on the 2014 schedule.
After hitting two home runs Friday, third baseman Jimmy Allen homered in his first at bat Saturday to put the Mustangs up 2-0 in the second inning. Allen later added two singles, giving him two straight three-hit day.
The Mustangs offense totaled 12 hits Saturday, following its 21-hit outburst Friday.
Sophomore right hander Casey Bloomquist earned his team-leading 12th win of the season. Bloomquist pitched seven innings allowing two runs. He struck out seven and walked one.
Bloomquist, who has pitched in the Sunday role all year, started Saturday in preparation for NCAA Tournament play, in which he will pitch second in the rotation.
Lefty reliever Taylor Chris pitched the eighth and ninth innings. Chris allowed his first earned run in 2014 Big West play.
The Mustangs are now 44-10 overall and 18-5 in the Big West Conference. Cal Poly will wrap up the regular season Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Northridge.
Freshman righty Justin Calomeni (8-2, 3.56) will start for Cal Poly against Jordan Johnson (3-4, 3.98) of Northridge.
If Cal Poly wins Sunday, the Mustangs need just a single UC Irvine loss in order to claim their first ever Big West Conference championship. Irvine is hosting Cal State Fullerton tonight and Sunday and then plays its final regular season series next weekend at Long Beach State.
UPDATE: In Saturday’s game between Irvine and Fullerton, down 1-0 in the ninth inning, Fullerton scored a run to tie the game. Fullerton then scored another run in the tenth inning to win the game 2-1.
