Small quake shakes North County

quake san simeonA 3.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter near San Simeon shook areas of Northern San Luis Obispo County and Southern Montery County early Monday morning.
Shaking began at 1:48 a.m. The quake’s epicenter was approximately 9 miles north of San Simeon, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The epicenter was 21 miles northwest of Paso Robles. Some shaking occurred in the city of Paso Robles.
Weak shaking also occurred around Northern Cambria.

Richter magnitude measures the energy released by a seismic event. It doesn’t measure the acceleration at the surface. Surface accelerations, the frequency of the accelerations, and the length of the shaking are the factors that effect us. There are many 3+ Richter events every month in California.
