A man suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol succeeded in carjacking a vehicle Tuesday in Nipomo, but he failed in an escape attempt. As sheriff’s deputies arrested the man, he passed out and was taken by an ambulance to a local hospital.

Around 2:08 p.m., the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a man running in circles in the middle of the road near the intersection of W. Tefft Street and N. Thompson Avenue. Witnesses said the man had a large wrench in his hand.

A driver came to a stop in order to avoid hitting the man. The suspect then jumped on top of the car and used a wrench to smash the windshield, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

The driver exited the vehicle, and the suspect got inside and began to drive away. He failed to escape because other drivers used their vehicles to box him in.

Deputies arrived at the scene and detained the man, whom the sheriff’s office has identified as 35-year-old Coachella resident Soloni Santini Lucio.

While being handcuffed, Lucio passed out. An ambulance then transported him to a hospital.

He remained hospitalized Tuesday evening.

Deputies found a substance on Lucio which they believe was illegal narcotics. Investigators are testing the substance to determine what it is.

Lucio faces potential charges of carjacking, vehicle theft and DUI.

hats off to those who helped!! what brave folks!

Had he jumped on my car and smashed my windshield with a wrench I would have taken him for a short ride up to the legal speed limit, perhaps a bit more, and them slammed on the brakes.

100% agree with the sentiment. Unfortunately if you did so, our brilliant legal system would likely prosecute you for reckless endangerment to the public and the individual and battery. Then the perp would sue you for his injuries and a lawyer would argue that a reasonable person would have just given up his car.

Probably best to give it up and buy a new windshield.

probably get you for a “hate crime” too as the guy is mexican. particularly if you have a trump bumper sticker on your car.

You would be correctly charged with attempted murder (or just murder) and yes sued too.

Perhaps you should live in a lawless land with vigilantes and hanging trees. In America we grew out of that age and have a legal system, not perfect. but not emotionally driven vigilantes.

Who said I was a vigilante?

My comment was based on the fear of my own well being. The LAST thing I’m going to do is jump out of my car when some guy is on top of it, beating it with a wrench. Getting out of the car would expose me to great bodily harm, if not death, from a strike from his wrench.

You jumped to conclusions.

I bet the driver wishes that rather than stopping he had floored it.

Would have saved us all a lot of money, time and aggravation.

So tell us how often you suggest to people that they “wishes that he had floored it” ie: attempted murder instead of giving up a wallet or car?

This is the first, but the way society is headed, it will likely not be the last time.

When you say “give up your wallet and car” how do you know that someone desperate, crazy or just lawless enough and (carrying a wrench by the way) won’t still bash your skull in whether you comply or not.

My comment above is obviously sarcastic, but do I wish people like Mr. Lucio were no longer breathing….absolutely.

Hi, my name is stupid.
