Central Coast activists plan a “Day Without a Woman” events

March 5, 2017

Central Coast activists are planning a general strike on March 8 as part of the “Day Without a Woman” demonstrations. Proponents are asking women to take a day off from work, school and shopping.

If required to work, promoters are asking supporters of the “Day Without a Woman” strike to wear red.

“In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women’s March, we join together in making March 8, “A Day Without a Woman,” recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity,” according to the group’s website.

In addition to the strike, organizers of the SLO Women’s March are planning a March 8 demonstration. Proponents are asking people to meet at Meadow Park in San Luis Obispo between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Supporters will then march through San Luis Obispo.

In Santa Barbara, proponents of a “Day Without a Woman” have planned a rally at De La Guerre Plaza at 11:30 p.m. that will include, speakers, musicians, a knitting circle and free fitness classes.

“Women are striking to show what a day without women looks like,” according to a press release on the event. “The strike will highlight “the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socioeconomic system, while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment and job insecurity.”

Gimmee a break with this stuff.

Want to see a real fun day? Do one without white males.

Watch the U.S. shut down and crime go through the stratosphere.

Is anyone else getting tired of Mayor Heidi Harmon representing the progressive movement instead of ALL the people who live in the City of San Luis Obispo? Enough already!

Home run…

Ms Harmon is way in over her head and out of her depth…

Do us all a favor, do your elected job and focus on the myriad of concrete issues facing “the happiest place on earth”, not more airy fairy community organizing!!!

Lol The election just happened. You had Jan and Dave etc representing business and developers, they had a turn.

Feel free to run for Mayor instead of hiding behind a anonymous keyboard.

Extremely tired. While Marx needed to go, I am already becoming disgusted with HH. Partisan politics has no place in municipal gov’t. If HH wants to play party politics then she shouldn’t have run for mayor. On top of this, she has no mandate — what did she win by, 10 votes?

To people who think that protests like this will result in any change, I ask, “How’d that Occupy Wall Street thing work out?”

EXACTLY. I’m all for “fighting” for what you believe in but this has been trivialized now. I can honestly say that I will be utterly embarrassed for any woman who participates in this. It proves nothing other than you’re a fool.

Or “the march” a few weeks ago, or the “stay home for a day if you’re not in the USA legally” protest? Both were wastes of time and money.

I am a woman. I work hard in a profession I love and feel that my contribution to the patients I serve and my community at large is immeasurable. I am a mother, grandmother, wife, homeowner, shopper, cook and I have a hundred more roles that. I do everyday, every week, every month. How in the world is my sitting home or going to a march going to prove that I am worthwhile. I do that everyday by living my life.

After reading half ways thru these comments I have come to yours. Thank you for your sanity and have a nice day.

Thank you! So well put. I am disheartened about more and more dividing of Americans. With so many problems, we need to all work together. My Grandma also said “sweep your own side of the street before you complain about your neighbors”. Do your own job.

Are there more than a few isolated idiots out there that think women don’t contribute fully to society? How many people have the ability to raise compensation for women at work? Does anyone think that those who discriminate against or harass women in the workplace is going to change based upon this protest?

The cause is just but I don’t think this will do anything to further it.

Way “more than a few isolated idiots” in Slo, including people who think the moon landing was fake, chem trails etc fact free living.

Sigh, if it were only true

The claim of gender based ‘pay inequality’ has been completely debunked. It simply isn’t true. Why would any company ever hire a man if they could get a woman to do the exact same job for 22% less?

Day without women? Lets switch that up; Can we do a couple of months without women? and make one of those months November…lol

Really? Has anyone else reached the point of ENOUGH already with all the self importance bullshit!!!?

Not just the immigrants and this but I also see, what if this type of person and his job wasn’t there and that type of person. Can we all just get the f**k over ourselves and admit everyone has a role in SOCIETY!!!? GEEZ!!
