Gov. Gavin Newsom planning to shut down all California beaches

Gov. Gavin Newsom is planning to close all California beaches and state parks on Friday, after people seeking relief from the heat flocked to beaches last weekend.

During a press conference on Wednesday, San Luis Obispo County Administrator Wade Horton announced the county’s plan to keep its beaches open. Locally, he said, most people at the beach last weekend appeared to be practicing social distancing.

However, a handful of beaches in Southern California were visibly crowded last weekend. On Monday, Newsom chastised beachgoers.

“This virus doesn’t take the weekends off. This virus doesn’t go home. We have to manage and augment our behavior,” Newsom said. “The only thing that will set us back is people stopping practicing physical distancing.”

Newsom’s announcement to shutter beaches follows requests from multiple rural counties to relax shelter-at-home rules.

All of the valley transplants are whining about the beach closures. Locals are stoked. Locals only.

I just read where Newsom is only going to close the beaches in Orange County. So that means they will all drive North or South to the next open beach thus making them overcrowded. I personally think Newsom has overdosed on tooth whitener.

Again, it’s all political nonsense and people who don’t think about anyone but themselves. So fine those people and let the rest of us get on with life. No one gives any kind of credible medical proof that we need to continue shutting down the country. And, no one even brings up past years in which tens of thousands died from the flu. We didn’t shut down then. And while the poor working class goes under, all the worthless congress jokers are getting paid to do in the American people.

@shelworth, golf courses here are open and are doing fine with social distancing in place. Over this past week I’ve noticed the parking lots of hotels full of cars again – tourists flocking to the coast – and yesterday while mountain biking I noticed a very large group pile all their bikes into three pick-up trucks, and pack themselves in after they finished riding the trail. Along the beaches I’ve noticed a lot of people gathering, even a big birthday party celebration at Shell Beach last night. I don’t think these are locals. The point is, tourists are coming here again and this county can’t exist without them. The cat is out of the bag already and shutting down the beaches is IMHO not the right thing to do at this point. It’s too late in the ‘game.’ While I don’t like all the tourists coming here and dissing all of our fairly compliant social distancing that we’ve been doing for the past month, there isn’t anything we can do about it. Just like we can’t keep the trash off the beaches and other public places once the tourists are here. Sorry, that may sound a bit biased, but ask anyone of us who walk the beaches regularly. Not so much trash in the winter without the tourists.

If one feels scared or vulnerable to the virus, then the answer is to stay home.

You’re right, so the logical thing to do would be to shutter all the motels and hotels right? Oh, how much is the bed tax? Never mind.

Problem is, many who are complaining will happily vote for Gavin in the next election or for President if he runs.
