Bill calls for shortening workweek to 32 hours in California

April 12, 2022

By JOSH FRIEDMAN

A bill in the California Legislature would shorten the workweek, as defined by state law, from 40 to 32 hours.

If adopted, AB 2932 would require companies with more than 500 employees to pay workers 1.5 times their regular rate for work in excess of 32 hours in a week. Failure to do so would constitute a misdemeanor.

There are more than 2,500 companies in California with more than 500 employees, according to Employment Development Department data. The overtime pay rule would not apply to businesses with 500 or fewer workers.

While the bill would change the definition of a workweek, a full workday would remain eight hours. Companies with more than 500 employees would still need to pay workers 1.5 times their regular rate for work done in excess of eight hours in a single day.

Democratic Assembly Members Evan Low and Christina Garcia co-authored AB 2932, which was introduced in February.

Garcia told the LA Times on Friday, the bill was inspired, in part, by an exodus of employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of whom were seeking a better quality of life.

“We’ve had a five-day workweek since the Industrial Revolution,” Garcia said. “But, we’ve had a lot of progress in society, and we’ve had a lot of advancements. I think the pandemic right now allows us the opportunity to rethink things, to reimagine things.”

This is clearly a bill written by people who have never run a business.

Obamacare requires employers with 50+emplopyees to provide healthcare benefits for anyone working 30 or more hours a week.

Requiring them to pay overtime to anyone working 32+ hours will result is more businesses leaving the state, and/or employees having their hours cut.

Where does it end?

Well this nothing but stupidity. As we’ve seen in the last two years, what you win people with, you win them too. Just setting the table for more failure, irresponsibility, and accountability for ones well being and quality of life. Typical of shallow thinking Progressive/Democrats.

Does this make sense to anybody? I need an interpreter.

Let’s if I can help you. Many government agencies and the media have won people to a sense of fear for control of the masses. Control leads to power over those in fear. That power leads to munipulation of the desired narratives to promote agenda’s that reinforces and strengthens the desired power and taking of personal freedoms. All through fear, intimidation, and threats. COVID-19 and Climate change to start. I hope you get it.

These clowns in Sacramento keep coming up with ways to destroy this state. Just wait until they let another 100,000 violent inmates out on the street to prey upon citizens. Idiots.

do you honestly think the companies are just going to pay 8 hours of OT to every employee? don’t think so, it’ll be “work 32 hours for 32 hours pay”. Great, 20% pay cut. And the rules apply to government workers as well? The unions will love that.

great idea for the millions just getting by on 40 hour paychecks.

Lets talk about this only after we make our state legislature a part-time position, maybe like 4 months a year tops, one month each quarter.

They already are

Companies with over 500 employees, every Government agency (everyone, from teachers to public safety) in California. I call this bill an instant financial disaster for California. Please don’t let them destroy what is left.

This is like jenga. How many cuts can you inflict on corporations before they move? They have calculated 32 hours is a small cut that will not drive too many corporations out, I guess.

Another overreach by government :/ Don’t want to work a 40 hour a week job? No one is forcing you to. This state is being destroyed piece by piece with these inane “laws”.

OMG! Can they think up anything more asinine? Clearly this is all about getting the lowest and most clueless voter to rally for Democrat support. There’s an election on the horizon!

Yeah, great idea to chase more business right out of state. What’s next? Wait!….don’t tell me…..Mandatory 2 hour Siesta between 11am & 1pm? Cots and private cubbys for each person’s safe space?
