Trump Administration awards Diablo Canyon Power Plant $271 million

The U.S. Department of Energy announced today it has awarded $271 million to help support Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant’s extended operations. Diablo Canyon Power Plant provides nearly ten percent of California’s power.

“A win for President Trump’s energy agenda, funding will allow the power plant to continue to provide secure power to residents, while keeping thousands of high-paying jobs in the region, according to the Department of Energy.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced in April it had approved the renewal of the operating licenses of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant for an additional 20 years. However, the renewal plan requires state approval.

Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he will not work to renew licenses to keep Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County operating beyond 2030. Newsom said he will leave that decision up to the next administration.

“Keeping Diablo Canyon online is critical to meeting California’s growing demand for affordable, reliable, and secure electricity,” said Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Ted Garrish. “The civil nuclear credit program is helping preserve this vital source of baseload power and ensuring that we don’t prematurely take reliable generation off the grid.

“The Department of Energy is committed to unleashing American nuclear energy and keeping facilities like Diablo Canyon operating safely and reliably for the American people.”

Because of the nuclear credit program, which was “created to provide strategic investments to preserve the nation’s existing nuclear fleet and protect high-paying American jobs,” the Diablo Canyon plant is able to stay open.

“Under the program, Pacific Gas and Electric is eligible to receive up to $1.1 billion to support activities necessary to keep Diablo Canyon operating,” according to  the Department of Energy. “Funds can be used to help cover the cost of reactor component replacements, equipment upgrades, and fuel procurement, or address unforeseen costs associated with extending the plant’s operations and maintaining continued service.”

Nuclear devastation is bad for everyone and for that reason, the best design is going to happen as were the extension of power plants everywhere else. Sadley much of the press is for political reasons and or funding for the resistance. I do wonder who lived on the planet before us and why they are gone, caution should never be forgotten regardless of today’s science or tomorrow’s promises.

And in another headline: PG&E agrees to pay $16 million to San Luis Obispo County agencies. I guess it’s now the entire country passing the bucks around, so to speak.

I’m sure none of these pots of money will be transferred without some skimming of the surface.

Cool. Now comes the earthquake and half of slo county is uninhabitable, and property owners are uninsured. Good news.

So when are ratepayers going to get back all the money they paid earlier in the form of higher electric rates to offset the shut down at Diablo when it was first announced the plant was closing?

While I’m okay with having Diablo in the neighborhood , this seems just weird…

Every time I hear a phase about “ protecting jobs” it seems like it’s tied to some murky sales pitch from politicians. These days it’s either “ jobs” or

“for the children “ depending on what they’re selling.

Now it the state would only remove its head from a very dark place and make the right decision!

President Trump is pro-nuclear power. It’s a pity that America’s nuclear program got stalled for so long. Let’s go.

This is only part of the money awarded under the Civil Nuclear Credit Program by the Biden administration to PG&E, meant to cover the $1.4 Billion loan from the taxpayers of California. Currently it is acknowledged that PG&E will not pay back at least $659 million of that amount and that California taxpayers should absorb the loss.


Think on that a minute, PG&E’s profit is up 41% this year over the record $2.6 Billion it made last year yet our General Fund should cover PG&E’s risky business venture and pay them more than $600 million dollars a year than the power generated at Diablo is worth on the open market.

You do realize that “profit” went to tens of thousands of stock holders….right?


Also, of that $2.6 billion, imagine how much went to pay fees, permits, regulatory assessments, fines, taxes, environmental costs/penalties, and the stupid pre-planned judgement on the fires (because PG&E is forced to make lines go hazardously through the forests, and ignorant state environmental laws keep PG&E from doing anything to make the lines go safely through the forests, so when a tree falls and shorts the line, it’s all PG&E’s fault for the ensuing fire)?

If it was profit, then those expenses were already accounted for.


PG&E receives so much from the taxpayer that they need to return most of the net profit to the ratepayers (taxpayers).
